Year 2 SATs Introduction: what are the SATs?  Statutory standardised assessment tests.  Statutory for Year 2 and Year 6.  Carried out annually.  Report a standardised measure of progress for each child. (Level)  Used by school, LA and government to check children are making the right kind of progress.

Year 2 SATs –  The format of the SATs – a two-step process:  Teacher Assessment and Tasks/Tests.

What is teacher assessment?   Teachers assess informally every time they teach.   Teachers record assessment and progress in an assessment file every half term.   When children are 7, 11 and 14, teachers make formal National Curriculum assessments of their work in some subjects. This is called teacher assessment. The level at which the child is working is recorded and reported.

What is the difference between a task and a test? Task  Involves a child working one to one, with an adult to assess their reading ability- using unseen, simple texts.  Or working in a small group doing maths activities. Test  Each child has their own test booklet and after an initial explanation works independently at his/her own pace.

Examples of past tests   At the end of the session there will be an opportunity to peruse some past papers.

Timings  When will the tests take place?  During the week: May 12 th – May 16 th  How long will they take?  All the tests added together will last approximately three hours.

The Outcome of the Assessment Process  An end of Key Stage level judgement is made, based on teacher knowledge and the outcome of the tasks and tests.  The levels attained in Maths, English and Science are reported to the parents, the Headteacher, the Year 3 teacher and the Local Authority.  Teacher assessment has greater weighting than the tests.

Levels Explained  National Curriculum levels for primary school children, go from level 1 to level 5, in Maths, English and Science.  Level 1 being the lowest and 5 the highest.  Each level covers a broad spectrum of objectives and on average takes two years to complete.  On average a child will make two thirds of a level progress during a year.

Children are expected to work their way through one level every two years.

 Each level is split into three grades:  A the higher third of the level  B the middle of the level  C the lower third of the level  An average child in Year 2 is expected to attain a level 2b by the end of Key Stage 1 / end of Year 2 in Maths and Reading and a level 2c in Writing. Examples of objectives for Writing Writing at level 2:  To be able to start sentences in different ways.  To plan stories so that they have a beginning, middle and end.  To begin sentences with a capital letter and end with a full stop.  To form letters correctly and start in the right place. Writing at level 3  To write in sentences of varying length- make some longer and more interesting.  Punctuate work with capital letters, full stops, question marks or exclamation marks.  Organise similar ideas into paragraphs.

Examples of objectives for Reading Reading at level 2  Respond to questions and predict what the book might be about from the title and front cover.  Use organisational devices to locate information; index, contents page, glossary, headings and use appropriate terminology.  Note when reading does not make sense and self corrects.  Make simple inferences about characters, events and settings. Reading at level 3  Read aloud with intonation and expression, taking account of punctuation including speech marks and exclamation marks.  Explore underlying themes and ideas, making clear reference to text.

Examples of Maths Objectives Maths at level 2 and 3:  Count, read, write and order numbers to at least 50. (2b)  Count read, write and order numbers to 100. (2a)  Order whole numbers to at least (3c)  Know by heart all addition and subtraction facts for each number to at least 10. (2b)  Know by heart multiplication facts for the 2 and 10 times tables. (2a)  Know by heart multiplication facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. (3c)

Summary of the Assessment Process  Everyday teaching and learning builds a picture of what each child can do.  Tasks and tests are used to add to this picture, in the week 12 th – 16 th May.  Moderation meetings attended to ensure consistent approach across all schools.

How You Can Help at Home  Low key approach.  Staying calm and relaxed.  Regular reading practice.  Writing for different purposes at home.  Mental Maths activities.  Homework activities, sometimes to consolidate.  Talking about topics of interest, helping your child to extend their vocabulary.
