Analyzing Literature What is is…… What it is NOT…

First, let’s look at what analysis is NOT: --paraphrasing --simple identification of example --summary of selection Talking to someone about what Winston knows about Big Brother is a huge risk especially mentioning the place he works in. To begin, Winston’s job at the ministry of truth was the opposite of the building’s title. And his job was to “rectify the original figures by making them agree with later ones.” Winston also has information about someone that previously exited but now is ashes. If he speaks to someone about this, he would most likely get disappeared or punished in the most harmful way. What is the point of this paragraph? What is the author (Orwell) trying to tell the readers about government and truth? Where is the ANAYLSIS?

Talking to someone about what Winston knows about Big Brother is a huge risk especially mentioning the place he works in. To begin with, Winston’s job at the Ministry of Truth was the opposite of the building’s title anything but truthful, as far as what we think of as truth. His job was to “rectify the original figures by making them agree with later ones.” Winston also has information about someone that previously exited but now is ashes. If he speaks to someone about this, he would most likely get disappeared or punished in the most harmful way. In other words, his job was to make sure what was documented as “truth” reflected what Big Brother, the government, had previously said. Clearly, Orwell had a problem with government. This is evident in the titles to the different ministries, or offices, of the government. Not only were the names ironic, as the Ministry of Truth where Winston worked, but this also tells us that Orwell was highly concerned with the corruptible power that the government has been given by the people.

This is analysis.

as well as the ways in which he/she does it… A thesis for an analytical essay must include what the author intended (author’s purpose) as well as the ways in which he/she does it… Author purpose Topic In 1984, Orwell captures the nightmare world of big government and the dangers of giving up too much of one’s life to it by creating a world with Thought Police, the language of “Newspeak”, and the absolute destruction of individuality. How This way, you are presenting not only what the author wrote, but also WHY (his/her massage) and HOW.

How is government depicted in 1984 AND what is Orwell saying about it? For your “redo” paper, choose one of the following writing prompts to guide you in your analysis: How is government depicted in 1984 AND what is Orwell saying about it? What is Orwell saying about love in his novel, 1984? What is Orwell saying about language, writing, and thinking in his novel, 1984? ***This will be 50% of your 9 weeks Exam grade***
