Bushfire? As far as I’m concerned I’m safe – this is suburbia!

Look, just text me when I should be pruning or cleaning out the gutters. Its not like I’m going to think about it otherwise.

As you can see I have showers on my roof, a water tank, diesel pump and fireproof hoses. I have a couple of water backpacks to put out embers.

As soon as I hear there is a fire, I leave and go and stay with my sister in the city. I leave my husband to it.

You don’t realise how fast the bush grows – I seem to be pruning constantly. I have managed to clear two sides of the house for about 3m, and widened our pathways. I am not getting rid of my fern garden though. I hope it’s enough.

I don’t think there is any point in having a plan because in a real situation things don’t go according to plan. Take the ’67 fires. I had to get through a road block to get home, the water ran out, and I watched the neighbour’s house burn.

I’ve rung the council, I’ve written to the council and they still will not cut down those trees on council land next door. I just know they will fall on my house in a bushfire.
