Assessment for Learning

Key Strategies: Strategy #1: Clarifying, understanding and sharing learning intentions…(show examples of work with different qualities) Strategy #2: Engineering effective classroom discussions, tasks and activities that elicit evidence of learning(multi participant questions where students answer simultaneously, on mini-boards or by multiple choice… Putting hands up to answer questions is not permitted) Strategy #3: Provide feedback that moves learners forward( two stars and a wish-feedback which focuses on two things student has done well and one thing they need to improve on…the best feedback is one provided to the teacher) Strategy #4: Activating students as learning resources for one another by using the GREEN-YELLOW-RED technique. Strategy #5: Activating students as owners of their own learning using C3B4ME technique.

Formative Assessments Formative: a.) Include five daily questions to assess student’s previous understanding of the lesson/standard(skills assessment) b.) Play Quiz Jeopardy: students will answer questions about Social Studies in a game format where the questions will be categorized with points awarded to the team that answer the most questions correctly… helps with (cooperative group learning) c.) Exit Ticket: end the lesson with an evaluative question which every student will write their answer on a small, blank piece of paper and turn in to teacher. Students must correctly answer the question to exit the classroom or face a consequence not limited to silent lunch

Summative Assessments: End of the unit Exams: mini-essay formatted questions (helps develop critical thinking skills versus memorization) Final Exams: Fill in the blanks and culminating project where student displays what they learned in a creative way; similar to a science project State mandated End of the Year Exam AYP scores to track students progress Report Cards

Implementation of both Assessments Utilizing warm-ups enables the teacher to assess student’s prior knowledge and what they are or are not retaining. Helps the teacher plan lessons accordingly Exit tickets are an excellent way to keep students engaged. Students must answer a question successfully to leave to the next period. This creates a student-centered classroom because it encourages students to develop the ability to problem solve on their own End of the Unit Exams, Culminating final projects and State Mandated Exams allows a teacher to EVALUATE student learning. All three of these help facilitate learning, thus creating an effective classroom environment
