15.2 EVOLUTION

ANCIENT CHANGING EARTH James Hutton and Charles Lyell Earth is millions of years old Process that changed the earth then are changing the earth now Hutton Layers of rock are moved by forces beneath the surface – wind, rain, etc. These processes occur REALLY slow Lyell **IF the Earth could change over time, might life change as well **This change would take many, many years, which suggests the earth is extremely old

HOW OLD IS THE EARTH? About 4.5 billion years old

WHAT IS THIS? THIS IS NOT HOW EARTH LOOKS TODAY

LAMARCK Proposed that by selective use or disuse of organs, organisms acquired or lost certain traits during their lifetime. These traits could then be passed on to their offspring. Over time, this process led to change in a species.

INHERITANCE OF NEW TRAITS An animal sometime during it’s lifetime, alters a body structure – leading to longer legs, or fluffier feathers If you become a body builder would your children have huge muscles when they are born? Lamarck’s Theory disproved Animals behavior/activities have no effect on inheritable characteristics

POPULATION GROWTH Malthus Not enough resources populations will eventually be leveled and die off Ex. War, famine, disease Why do humans produce fewer offspring?
