Established by the European Commission The European Research Council © Art & Build Architect / Montois Partners / credits: S. Brison October 2016 │ 1 ERC Open to the World Mart Saarma ERC Vice-President

Established by the European Commission ERC offers independence, recognition & visibility to work on a research topic of own choice, with a team of own choice to gain true financial autonomy for 5 years to negotiate with the host institution the best conditions of work to attract top team members (EU and non-EU) and collaborators to move with the grant to any place in Europe if necessary (portability of grants) to attract additional funding and gain recognition; ERC is a quality label │ 2 Scientific Freedom │ 2

Established by the European Commission Starting Grants starters (2-7 years after PhD) up to € 1.5 Mio for 5 years Advanced Grants track-record of significant research achievements in the last 10 years up to € 2.5 Mio for 5 years Proof-of-Concept bridging gap between research - earliest stage of marketable innovation up to €150,000 for ERC grant holders ERC Grant Schemes Consolidator Grants consolidators (7-12 years after PhD) up to € 2 Mio for 5 years │ 3

Established by the European Commission │ 4 Open to the World ERC grants open to any nationality, resident anywhere at the time of application Proportion of evaluated proposals from non-ERA nationals by call year

Established by the European Commission Open to the World ERC Grants awarded to 33 Non-ERA Nationalities Almost 8% of all ERC grants to principal investigators of non-ERA nationality

Established by the European Commission │ 6 Open to the World Team Members from outside Europe Nationality of ERC project teams (PIs not included) Analysis of 1,901 Starting and Advanced Grants In all ERC grants + 9,000 non-ERA team members most from China, US, India, and Russia EU: 71% Assoc. Countries: 10% non-ERA: 17% unknown: 2%

Established by the European Commission Who can apply: Holders of an ERC grant with an idea substantially drawn from an ERC-funded project │ 7 Amount: up to €150,000 per grant (18 months) Total budget for 2017: € 20 million What for: establish the innovation potential of the idea: technical validation, market research, clarifying IPR strategy, investigating business opportunities Evaluation: Experts in technology transfer check the innovation potential and that the plan is reasonable Open Innovation ERC Proof of Concept Grant

Established by the European Commission  Supports the implementation of open access to the results from ERC funded research (publications and research data) Workshops with stakeholders to identify gaps (SH domain, Research data management and sharing, OA to monographs, …) Supporting mechanisms for OA infrastructures (Europe PubMed Central, OAPEN, arXiv) Open Science │ 8  ERC Open Access Guidelines (latest revision: February 2016) The ERC considers that the most effective way of valorizing the results of ERC-funded grants for future research is to provide free online access to them.

Established by the European Commission ERC Scientific Council Strategy on Open Access ERC funding can not be used for the sole purpose of the collation and compilation of existing material in new databases On the other hand, the ERC is supportive of the open data pilot and beneficiaries are expected to ensure appropriate management (including preservation and curation) of the research data they generate in order to ensure its sustainability These provisions are designed to facilitate access, re-use and preservation of research data generated during the ERC funded research work. This is more or less common practice in the Life Sciences but this is not so obvious in other domains │ 11

Established by the European Commission Open to the World Grantees outside ERA at Application Note: ERC grantees residing outside the European Research Area at the time of application Mainly European researchers moving/returning from the US

Established by the European Commission │ 13 Open to the World Implementing arrangements Opportunity for non-European researchers supported by non-European agencies to visit ERC research teams (unilateral approach). The non-European researchers should be excellent ("national version" of the ERC grantee) The non-European scientist is the one taking the initiative in the "matchmaking" (it is not the ERC/the ERC PI/the foreign agency…) The ERC does not intervene in the selection of the non-European visitors. In general terms, costs of the visit are mostly covered by the non-European agency. Implementing arrangements signed with the following countries:  USA (2012)  Republic of Korea (2013)  Argentina (2015)  China (2015)  Japan (2015)  South Africa (2015)  Mexico (2016)  Brazil tbc  Canada tbc
