Day 1

Why leave the comfort of Europe to go to the colonies?

1. Cavaliers – wealthy “gentlemen” from England, given land in VA by the King of England. 2. Colonial Era – period of colonization and colonies in the US, Colony – territory under the immediate political control of a state. 4. Covenant community –religious group that binds itself together by an agreement, or covenant. Created by Puritans in Massachusetts. 5. Direct democracy – government for which people make decisions for themselves, rather than electing a representative. Practiced by Puritans in New England colonies. 6. Indentured servant – person bound to labor in exchange for passage to the colonies, most often Virginia.

7. Jamestown – first permanent English colony in the New World (1607). Started by the VA Company of London. 8. Joint-stock company – company in which investors buy shares to share risk. An example was the VA Company of London. 9. House of Burgesses – created in 1640’s in Jamestown, VA. First elected body in the New World. 10. Mayflower Compact – signed by Puritans before colonization, Puritans agreed to a government and set of rules for the new colony. 11. Puritans – religious group that left England for religious freedom, settled in the New England colonies.

Day 2 – SOL VUS

Europeans had a variety of reasons for coming to America. The primary two were: 1. Religious Freedom (New England/Middle colonies) 2. Economic Opportunities (Southern/Middle colonies) 10

Examine each primary source and answer the following for all four: 1) Based on the document, what was the purpose of the colony? 2) How were you able to determine that from the document/picture?

Settled by Puritans that wanted religious freedom from persecution they faced in Europe. Formed a “covenant community” based their beliefs and Mayflower Compact. Intolerant Practiced direct democracy (town hall meetings) 12

Settled by the English, Dutch, and German- speaking immigrants. Sought both religious freedom and economic opportunity. 13

Settled by those seeking to make $$. Early Virginia settlers were “cavaliers” Poor immigrants settled in Western VA or in the Shenandoah Valley. Most were farmers. Indentured servants were early workforce. 14

1607 Business venture by VA Company VA House of Burgesses established. Now known as the VA General Assembly. 15

Using copy paper and colored pencils you will be creating a recruiting poster for Europeans coming to the colonies. Create ONE recruiting poster for one of the colonies of your choice (New England, Middle, and Southern/Virginia). Draw ONE picture on your poster AND write an explanation for WHY people should come to that colony Try to make the colony sound appealing to the type of Europeans that would come to that colony (example: if I wanted to attract bears, I would use honey) 20 minutes to complete.

Day 2

While watching the video, answer the questions on the sheet I am giving you. Pay special attention to the effect of Europeans coming to the colonies on: Europeans, Indians, and Africans.

During the period of colonization, Europeans, Africans, and Native Americas were all beginning to interact in ways they never had.

Break into pairs (2 people) Together, the pair should create a tree map showing the effects of colonization on the following three groups: Indians Europeans Africans 10 minutes to complete.

Explorations of the English and Spanish led to violent conflicts with the Indians. The Indians lost their traditional territories and fell victim to new diseases from Europe.

By contrast, the French exploration in Canada did not lead to large scale immigration and the relationships with Indians were cooperative.

The growth of an agricultural economy based on large landholdings in the Southern colonies/Caribbean led to the introduction of slavery. The first Africans were brought against their will (involuntary) to Jamestown in 1619 to work on tobacco plantations.

Columbian Exchange – exchange of agricultural products between America and Europe. Triangular trade developed between the Americans, Europe, and Africa. This led to an increased amount of trade and more wealth for Europe.

1. Africans were used as slaves. 2. American Indians lost territory and fell victim to European diseases. 3. New agricultural products were made available in Europe and the Americas.

Answer the following prompt: What if Europeans had never colonized North America? Describe the impact no colonization would have had on Europeans, Africans, and Indians. The journal must be at least two paragraphs (five sentences each) in length. Draw three pictures that represent how you believe life would have been different for Indians, Africans, and Europeans if colonization had not occurred. These should be good drawings! No stick figures!
