How long did WW2 last? World War 2 started in 1939 and ended in 1945.After Germany had took over France, they tried to take over England (London). England and France were the main countries in the war. England started the war when Germany refused to abandon their attack on Poland. The Nazis (the German soldiers) would often take mothers from their children and take them to Germany. During the war, Winston Churchill would often make famous speeches. Click to visit the website

The Blitz The Blitz were when the Germans dropped bombs at night. The Germans dropped two types of bombs. One would start a fire while the other would smash down buildings. To prevent this, the people in London would put black paper over their doors and windows so it looked like they weren’t at home. This is the reason children were evacuated to the countryside. People would have their own air raid shelter to keep them safe or they would just sleep in the underground station. A siren would warn the people when the Germans (nick-named the Jerry) were attacking. This happened in East London quite a lot.

Rations The people didn’t have a wide choice to choose from but their rations included: cheese, meat, bacon, sugar, tea, butter, eggs, spam, potatoes, fish and salads. Many of them from different countries. They required a ration book. The Nazis only allowed very limited amounts of food and you had to register when you were over 12. The local council would give you a ration book. If you were under 12 then you would automatically get one.

Evacuees At night the Blitz would hit houses which meant that thousands of children's lives were in grave danger. About 800,000 children were evacuated to safety to live in the countryside. Only a mother with a very young child would be able to go to the countryside with their mothers. The children would stay at a stranger’s house during the war. When the war ended, those whose mothers were still alive could go home.
