Of Mice and Men Final Writing Assignment

Option 1: Alternate Ending  Rewrite chapter 6 (the last section) in Of Mice and Men  Include dialogue and specific descriptions  Remember, you are changing only chapter 6 (so Curley’s wife is still dead, Lennie still ran to the brush to hide, and the guys are all still looking for him)  Must be true to the book  Four pages minimum, double spaced

Option 2: Epilogue  Write a Chapter 7 for Of Mice and Men.  What is left unsaid by Steinbeck?  What happens to George?  Remember, the rest of the book stays the same – Lennie is still dead – you are just writing what happens next  Must be true to the book  Four pages minimum, double spaced

Option 3: Eulogy  Write a eulogy (funeral speech) for Lennie, delivered by George  Should include information about George and Lennie’s lives together, his feelings, etc.  Not written as a speech to Lennie, but as a speech about Lennie and his life  Three page minimum, double spaced

Planning  Think about what you want to write  Re-read the prompt to make sure you understand what is being asked  Make notes/ fill out graphic organizers  Get organizers approved by a teacher to make sure you are on track

Grading  Focus (clearly set the scene)  Content (multiple details, correct length, include characterization, character dialogue, conflict – needs to have a solid plot structure)  Organization (present your ideas clearly and logically)  Style (precise, descriptive word choices, well-constructed sentences effectively)  Conventions (check grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization)
