Of Mice and Men

Significant Passages Pg. 2 “…he dragged his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws.” In this passage, Steinbeck uses animal characteristics to symbolize Lennie’s demeanor and intelligence.

Significant Passages Pg. 3 “You gonna be sick like you was last night” In this passage it becomes apparent that George is Lennie’s caregiver of sorts. George’s emphasis on “last time” shows audience that Lennie needs George to survive.

Significant Passages “They come, an' they quit an' go on; an' every damn one of 'em's got a little piece of land in his head. An' never a God damn one of 'em ever gets it.” - This passages supports the theme of the American dream and companionship. While many people during the Great Depression had dreams their dreams shattered, George and Lennie believe they can achieve their goal if they stick together.

Significant Passage “Well, I never seen one guy take so much trouble for another guy. I just like to know what your interest is.” This passage shows the disparity of people during the Great Depression. The boss of the ranch couldn’t believe that two people would others before themselves.

Significant Passages “ Well I aint giving you no trouble. Think I don’t like to talk to somebody every once in a while? Think I like to stick in that house all the time?” - In this passage, Steinbeck conveys how universal the need for companionship is by juxtaposing the loneliness of a black stable buck and a wealthy wife. Though Crooks and Curley’s wife appear different, they have similar feelings.

Significant Passages “I done planted crops for damn near everybody in this state, and when I harvested ‘em, it wasn’t none of my harvest. But we gonna do it now, don’t make no mistake about it.” Though it comes late in his life, Candy has the epiphany in this passage that the American dream is possible. He would rather die trying to achieve that dream than live wondering about it.

Pg. 95 “I’ll work my month an’ I’ll take my fifty bucks an I’ll stay in some lousy cat house…then I’ll come back an’ work another month an I’ll have fifty more.” In this passage George has gained a more realistic perspective of his fantasy. Once Lennie has gone, George’s life is becomes the same as any other rancher.

Significant Passages Pg 36 “I shoulda shot him myself” The killing of Candy’s dog earlier in the story foreshadows Lennie’s death. George, however, would not make the same mistake as Candy and killed George himself before letting him suffer at the hands of someone else.
