Key Success Story Background April 2016Global CE / HTM Success Stories2 Before 2012 it was inexistent a formal biomedical engineering structure in any of the 32 State Health Services (SESA in Spanish) in Mexico, that could look for the following: –Medical equipment management –Medical equipment budget control –Participation in decision making regarding medical equipment In 2012 it was accepted the creation of the Biomedical Engineering Directorate for the Guanajuato state health services (state MoH) and it was officially inscribed in the Guanajuato State Government ByLaw, making it the first time in Mexico. The BE Directorate it’s under the Planning Directorate who in turns responds to the State Minister. The BE Directorate has the following personnel: 3 BEs, 2 Electromechanic Engineers, 2 IT engineers, 1 administrative support. The BE Directorate has its own operational budget.

Key Success Story The BE Directorate actually it’s in charge, among others, of the following: –Planning control of all things relative to medical equipment for hospitals in the state. –Promote inclusion of innovative technologies –Coordination of annual budget for medical equipment, both for acquisition and maintenance –Advisory support for accreditation and certification regarding medical equipment –Information support for official inventory purposes –Telehealth strategies coordination April 2016Global CE / HTM Success Stories3

Conclusions and Benefits Better communication between providers and users through the BE personnel Better guidelines for medical equipment purchases, at state level External services under control, reducing 30% downtime of medical equipment. Establishment of technical specifications charts for medical equipment, for better decision making in acquisition Active participation in plant planning for new hospitals. Increased interest in biomedical engineering throughout the state. Support in healthcare technology management to other health sectors. Strengthen telehealth efforts.
