Presentation transcript:

Who would Jesus choose to be his disciple and why? John committed a serious crime when he was younger. He went to prison for 4 years but went through an education programme, and has been through rehabilitation. Peter has never committed a crime. He is an atheist and often likes to argue with people over religion. He likes to prove people wrong in their beliefs and asks really tricky questions. Write down who you think God would choose as his disciple and why you think this.

Starter List: Who would not have been allowed through the temple doors in Jesus’ time?

Discuss with the person next to you: Why were people considered to be unclean in Jesus’ time? How might these people have been treated?

The Call of Levi – Mark 2:13-15 LO: To know and understand the story of the Call of Levi. D/E - I can retell the story of the call of Levi. B/C – I can explain the impact of the call of Levi. A*/A – I can evaluate whether Jesus should have chosen Levi or not.

What’s the difference between prejudice and discrimination?

Prejudice: to be in favour or against someone or something without evidence. To pre- judge. Discrimination: to treat someone or something differently either favouring or denying something, e.g. not allowing lepers to be part of the community in Mark’s Gospel. Justice: ensuring that all are treated fairly and their rights are upheld You can get asked to define words so make sure you learn them. Tip!

Can you spot the mistakes?

13 Jesus went back again to the shore of Lake Galilee. A crowd came to him, and he started teaching them. 14 As he walked along, he saw a tax collector, Levi son of Alphaeus, sitting in his office. Jesus said to him, "Follow me." Levi got up and followed him. 15 Later on Jesus was having a meal in Levi's house. A large number of tax collectors and other outcasts was following Jesus, and many of them joined him and his disciples at the table. 16 Some teachers of the Law, who were Pharisees, saw that Jesus was eating with these outcasts and tax collectors, so they asked his disciples, "Why does he eat with such people?" 17 Jesus heard them and answered, "People who are well do not need a doctor, but only those who are sick. I have not come to call respectable people, but outcasts." The Call of Levi and Eating with Sinners: 2:13-17

Jesus said to Levi, “Come with me.“ Levi ran away scared. Jesus was having a meal in Levi's house. A large number of widows and other outcasts was following Jesus. Many of them joined him and his disciples at the table. Some teachers of the Law, who were Pharisees, saw that Jesus was eating with these people and tax collectors. They asked his disciples, "Why does he eat with such people?“ Jesus heard them and answered, "People who are sick do not need a doctor, but only those who are well. “I have not come to call respectable people, but outcasts." Copy the statements but make sure you spot my mistakes and correct them!

Jesus said to Levi, “Follow me.“ Levi immediately followed him. Jesus was having a meal in Levi's house. A large number of tax collectors and other outcasts were following Jesus. Many of them joined him and his disciples at the table. Some teachers of the Law, who were Pharisees, saw that Jesus was eating with these people and tax collectors. They asked his disciples, "Why does he eat with such people?“ Jesus heard them and answered, "People who are well do not need a doctor, but only those who are sick. “I have not come to call respectable people, but outcasts." Check your work! Give it a tick if you got it right.

Today we are going to do some annotation. This means highlighting a part of the text, drawing an arrow from it and then writing a note of understanding about it.

People would have been amazed at Jesus choosing a tax collector. Levi didn’t think about it. Straight away he left everything!

‘Levi should not have been a disciple because he was a bad role model’. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer showing you have considered more then one point of view. (6 marks) Some Others I Tip!

Agree I agree, Levi should not have been a disciple because he was not sorry for his sins I also agree because Levi would have been a bad role model for other people who were considering following Jesus. Finally, I agree because Levi was a traitor of the Jewish people- these are God’s chosen ones. However, I disagree because all of the other disciples were ordinary, normal men and were sinners too. I also disagree because it shows that Jesus came for those who were outcasts and low down in society- anyone can be a disciple. Finally, I disagree because it shows that people have the power to change when Jesus calls them. Disagree ‘Levi should not have been a disciple because he was a bad role model’. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer showing you have considered more then one point of view. (6 marks)
