Which encounters have we studied in John this summer? John the Baptist Nicodemus Blind man Disciples/Peter Pilate High Priestly Prayer

What do you know about Thomas?

Thomas was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Matthew 10:1-4 1 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Thomas speaks again in John 14:5. There, Jesus had just explained that he was going away to prepare a heavenly home for his followers, and that one day they would join him there. Thomas reacted by saying, "Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" When Jesus speaks about going to Lazarus to ‘wake him up’, Thomas does not understand and fears stoning of Jesus in Judea. Nevertheless he says: John 11:16 Then Thomas said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” The most important encounter of Jesus with Thomas happened after Jesus’ resurrection. We will study that passage in detail tonight. Then Jesus makes this claim:I am the way, the truth and the life no one comes to the Father except through me (vs 6)

There are historical documents that refer to Thomas’ mission trip to South India. There is a so-called Gospel of Thomas, which is not part of the Bible. There is also a book called Acts of Thomas, part of occult/gnostic literature (Nag Hammadi), which is rejected by the entire Christian community.

Jesus and Thomas after the resurrection John 20:19-31 video clip video clip 19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” 24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus ), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Discuss this passage in two groups
