DUTCH IN NEW AMSTERDAM (NEW YORK) Founded by the Dutch in Colony was made up of what is present day New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey. The goal of New York was to become a private money making venture. Diverse population and religious tolerance.

2 ND ANGLO-DUTCH WAR Began due to England’s desire to end the Dutch domination of World Trade In 1664, Charles II moved towards war by releasing swarms of English privateers to attach Dutch trade and taking the colony of New Amsterdam. After several battles, on July 31, 1667 both sides signed the Treaty of Breda which ended the war. The treated allow both parties to take the land acquired during wartime. British gained control of New Amsterdam, divided it, and named the largest portion New York.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE MID ATLANTIC COLONIES In 1681, King Charles granted William Penn a land charter as repayment of a loan that Penn’s father made to the king. Pennsylvania became a place of refuge for English Quakers. Because of the high amount of religious tolerance, Penn’s colony was attractive to other immigrants such as Germans and Scots-Irish,

Instead they set up a trading post to acquire the area’s valuable natural resources and export them to Europe. Quebec was the 1 st permanent French settlement in North America.
