So you want to go on to Post-Secondary… School Funding, Scholarship & Bursary Information

What we’ll be talking about:  Ways to pay for school  Kinds of scholarships and Bursaries  Building your scholarship resume

Way to pay:  District Programs -  CTC – trades and technical training  Dual credit  Student loans, grants and lines of credit  Government Programs  Scholarships, bursaries and awards

District Programs  Career and Technical Centre  Dual credit with VIU  Part of tuition is paid by the district SD68 pays part!

Student Loans and Grants  One application for BC and Canada loans  Usually include a grant portion that doesn’t need to be paid back  Parent income can affect eligibility  Banks also provide student Loans and lines of credit al_aid/index.page You borrow money to pay!

Government Programs  Post Secondary Student Support Program  Open to Treaty/Status First Nation students  Applications must be made through your local band office  Canadian Armed Forces  Will pay for programs in return for time served in the forces  2 mths of service for 1 mth of paid education  Only some programs qualify aandc.gc.ca/eng/ / /paideducation-96 The government pays!

Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards  Scholarships are awarded based on academic criteria and are often program-specific  Bursaries are based on financial need in the family  Awards can be based on affiliations or donor specific-criteria Donors pay!

Ministry Scholarships and Awards:  BC Achievement You apply for:  Pathway to Education (teaching)  BC Excellence Scholarship – only 1 Barsby nomination  Community and school leadership, career path  Dogwoods (District Authority)  Adult or Reg Grad program  Areas: Indigenous Culture, Fine Arts, Technology, Languages, Athletics, Service, Trades)  training/k-12/support/provincial-scholarships

External Scholarships  Lots of organizations offer scholarships and awards  Government and organizations  Businesses where you work  There are many websites that are scholarship databases where you enter your data and they match you with applicable awards      

Entrance Scholarships and Athletic Awards  Scholarships and awards you receive from the University you are applying for  Check out each school’s website for information  Can be based on academic achievement or financial need  Also awarded for participation in sports programs.  There is usually a recruitment process

American Schools  Many Athletics options are with American schools  Common Application 

What’s important NOW!  Academic achievement  Extra-curricular activities  School/community service  Leadership involvement  Good citizenship  Social media clean-up  Membership in specific organizations - affiliations  Financial need  Nomination  Start thinking about specific post-secondary studies or specific careers

Scholarship Resumes  Resume format should be clear and easy to read  Current achievements first  Include the following:  Career/post secondary goals  Education, honors and awards  Work experience and extra trainings and workshops  Memberships and affiliations  Extracurricular athletics, arts and service activities  Community service  Enrichment – music, art, travel, hobbies

Scholarship Applications and Essays  Often required for big money awards  PROOFREAD your work!  Make sure you are eligible for award  Know the criteria for the essay and follow any directions provided  Make sure to connect real life examples to themes  Tone is important – you want to be memorable and seem intelligent!

Getting started…  Pass your classes so you graduate! Do your best!  Complete our grad post-secondary survey so we can support you!  Start looking at your post secondary options and possible funding options  Some scholarships have fall deadlines!  Start or continue taking part in extra-curricular activities  Clean up your social media profile  Build your Scholarship resume!  Attend our more in-depth scholarship meeting in December
