1. What is an Action Verb?

Look at the sentences below. What do you notice about the underlined words? Sylvia entered the short story contest. Now many people read her story. We enjoy her tail about a leprechaun. I wonder about the contest. Robin hoped for a prize. Turn and talk. Be prepared to share.

An Action Verb is a word that expresses action. Every sentence you write has two parts, a subject and a predicate. The main work in the predicate is often an ACTION VERB. The action verb tells what the subject of the sentence does or did.

Identify the verbs in the following sentences. 1.We read the contest rules. 2.The judges outlined the rules. 3.Only fifth graders enter the contest. 4.We work on our stories all week. 5.Sylvia planned her story carefully.
