Countries with the Most Websites United States JapanGermany United Kingdom

Basic Advice Simple Language Use the Active Voice Avoid Humor Avoid words with multiple meanings Consider Dates, Time, and Geography Phone and fax numbers Currency Conversion Avoid using terminology that does not easily lend itself to translation Use graphics to assist in communicating written concepts

Technological Advice Consider access methods for potential users outside your own country – the most glitz and highest technology features may not be right for everyone. Remember the user with disabilities.

Language GlobalizationMultilingual Legal considerations InternationalizationLocalization Culturally sensitive

Graphics and Icons Choose an appropriate icon – from a global perspective the common U.S. image of a shopping cart is not understood. Color considerations – e.g., no black borders. Instead of highlighting your translated pages by linking to them with an image of a specific country’s national flag, use a picture of your product and some words in that language, in a font familiar to that country’s or region’s users.

Belgium

Conclusion: Thoughts on Writing a Global Paper We found the advice to avoid idioms, colloquialisms, etc., difficult to follow as our writing still has a Western, English language bias. Especially with the ubiquitous nature of the web, information professionals now need to “work globally, counsel globally, and develop strategy with regard to deployment of resources,” within a global environment.
