John Cabot BY JACK ROBERTSON
Giovanni Caboto also known as John Cabot, was born in Venice, Italy. He was a very skilled navigator who wished to explore the world.
Cabot was born in Italy but sailed for the country of England. In 1497 he set sail. King henry the 7 th paid for his voyage.
He had only one very small ship with just 17 men on board. He wanted to sail away from Columbus’s route to avoid claimed land by Spain.
Interesting fact: he was at the age of only 49 years old! And no one know how.
John traveled around the coast of Ireland and the went all the way a crossed they Atlantic. On June 24, Cabot made it to the eastern coast of present day Canada and claimed that land for England.
He managed to make it all the way down present day Maryland. But like Columbus he thought he was in the indies.
But around one year later he had died. Some say he was in a ship wreck or died from sickness even the he was starved to death.
