Scheme of Redemption

Teacher Needed June 15 (NEXT WEEK)

Goals of Our Study To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind - who He is and what He is like Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet Slide 3

Main concepts of our study "Scheme of Redemption" - The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin View the Bible as a novel, with 66 different chapters The real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin Slide 4

Main concepts of our study Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence Genesis 3-12 – The Background of Redemption Genesis – Redemption through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph Slide 5

Recap God makes three main promises to Abraham A great nation would come forth from Abraham (Genesis 12:2, 13:16, & 15:5) His descendants would receive the land of Canaan as an inheritance (Genesis 12:7, 13:15 & 17) Through Abraham, all the families/nations of the earth would be blessed (Genesis 12:3) Slide 6

Recap Sarah and Abraham die, and focus switches to Isaac God makes the same 3 promises to Isaac (Genesis 26:3-5) Isaac and Rebekah have twins born to the, Esau and Jacob While pregnant, God informed Rebekah that two nations were in her womb, and the older would serve the younger Slide 7

Recap Esau sold his birthright, as the oldest child, to Jacob for a bowl of stew Through the deceptions of Rebekah and Jacob, Issac gave Esau’s blessing to Jacob Slide 8

Life of Jacob Genesis 27:46 – Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am tired of living because of the daughters of Heth; if Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth, like these, from the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?” Esau had married two Hitite (Heth) women. Genesis 26:34 tells us that these women brought grief to Isaac and Rebekah Slide 9

Life of Jacob Due to Rebekah’s fears of Isaac’s future wife, Abraham sends Jacob to Rebekah’s brother, Laban, to find a wife Genesis 28:3-4 – “May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples. May He also give you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your descendants with you, that you may possess the land of your sojournings, which God gave to Abraham.” Slide 10

The promises are made to Jacob En route to find a wife, Jacob has a dream. He sees a ladder from Heaven, with angels going up and down it and the Lord at the top of it. The Lord makes the same promises to Jacob that He made to Abraham and Isaac Slide 11

The promises are made to Jacob Genesis 28:12-13 – [Jacob] had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you and to your descendants. Slide 12

The promises are made to Jacob Genesis 28:14-15 – Your descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Slide 13

The promises are made to Jacob Jacob awoke and is amazed by what he just experienced. He then says: Genesis 28:20-22 – Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey that I take, and will give me food to eat and garments to wear, and I return to my father’s house in safety, then the Lord will be my God. This stone, which I have set up as a pillar, will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.” Slide 14

Interesting statements? Jacob makes a vow saying: IF God will be with me and will keep me on this journey (to find a wife) IF He will give me food to eat and garments to wear And IF I return to my father’s house in safety THEN the Lord will be my God What’s the problem with Jacob’s thinking here? He seems to not know God, and assumes that God is only worthy if God serves Jacob Slide 15

Jacob’s wives Jacob meets and wants to marry his cousin Rachel. He agrees to work for his uncle, Laban, for seven years in order to marry Rachel After the seven years, through some deception by Laban, Jacob inadvertently ends up marrying Leah. After a week, Rachel is also given to him as a wife Leah comes with her handmaiden, Zilpah, and Rachel comes with Bilhah Slide 16

Jacob and Esau reconciled (Gen 32-33) Jacob has left Laban and is headed back to his family (Isaac) Along the way, he sends word to Esau that he’s coming home, and Esau comes out to meet Jacob with 400 men Jacob becomes very afraid and prepares for Esau to confront and attack him by dividing up his people and herds into two companies, so that if one is attacked, the other can flee Slide 18

Jacob and Esau reconciled (Gen 32-33) Esau sees Jacob and runs to him. They embrace and cry and offer gifts and service to one another, but each refuses and it turns into a sappy, but wonderful, story of love, family, and forgiveness Slide 19

Jacob renamed Israel Jacob had prepared to meet Esau, by moving his people and herds into two companies, and away from himself so that they would not be harmed by Esau He was then alone and an odd thing happens… Slide 20

Jacob renamed Israel Genesis 32:24-27 – Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of his thigh; so the socket of Jacob’s thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with him. Then he said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking.” But he said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” So he said to him, “What is your name?" And he said, “Jacob.” Slide 21

Jacob renamed Israel Genesis 32:28-31 – He said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed.” Then Jacob asked him and said, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And he blessed him there. So Jacob named the place Peniel, for he said, “I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been preserved.” Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over Penuel, and he was limping on his thigh Slide 22

Jacob renamed Israel Genesis 35:9-12 – Then God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Paddan-aram, and He blessed him. God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; You shall no longer be called Jacob, But Israel shall be your name.” Thus He called him Israel. God also said to him, “I am God Almighty; Be fruitful and multiply; A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, And kings shall come forth from you. “The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, And I will give the land to your descendants after you.” Slide 23
