Welcome to Fifth Grade Math & Science Ms. Varner Room # 144

About Ms. Varner I graduated from Auburn University Montgomery with a Masters of Childhood Education. I also attended Auburn University and earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Horticulture.

More About Ms. Varner I am a mother of a five year old little girl named Katie Belle. Besides teaching, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, reading, and learning new things.

My Goal for Fifth Grade Math and Science My goal this year is to provide many learning experiences for your child to be more independent and to become a life long learner.

How to Reach Ms. Varner o I can be reached via o Also, the telephone number for the school is (334) o If you leave a message, I will return your call as soon as possible. o School Hours o 8:10am-3:10pm

Webpage A class webpage to provide you with information has been set up for use by parents, as well as students.  Go to Wilson Elementary and look under School Staff  Next look for Alica Varner - Fifth Grade  Click on the link and check out this classroom news, information and useful links

Transportation o If you find that your child’s transportation arrangements are going to change, please notify us in writing as soon as possible. It is school policy that a student will remain leaving the school in the manner on file unless we are notified in writing. This is strictly for the safety of your child.

Transportation: Bus Bus Hotline: Special Education:  Call Monday-Friday 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  –

Car Riders:  Morning drop off - at Pod A door no earlier than 7:30am  Afternoon pick – please have a sign with your child’s name in the windshield of your car. Your child will meet you in the front of the school.

Money Mondays: We ask that a separate check be written for lunch and snack. All checks can be made payable to Wilson Elementary School. Please make sure to include a working phone number at the top. If it is a lunch check please write your child's lunch number at the top so we can make sure it goes into the correct account.

Snack You may purchase snack and/or juice for your child from the school. Each item is $0.50 each. Your child may pay for snack weekly, monthly, or yearly. 1 Juice is $.50 and 1 Snack is $.50. Snack and/or juice Money will only be collected on Mondays! If child is absent, money will be collected when the child returns. Snack money is nonrefundable. You may also choose to bring a snack/juice from home.

Breakfast and Lunch Student Breakfast - $0.75 Lunch – $1.50 Visitor Breakfast Student Visitor Adult Visitor Lunch Student Visitor Adult Visitor- 3.50

Tuesday folders: A Tuesday folder will be sent home bi- weekly. The folder will contain graded papers as well as behavior notes, newsletters, school, and community information. Sign and RETURN both the folder and the papers the following day. I will also try to have a progress report in with the papers.

Behavior Management Policy I will be implementing a behavior management system. The following are the guidelines for how this system will work. The system will be a “strike system.” Strikes will be given for the areas of concern listed on the following slides.

Behavior Management Plan We do not send a weekly report home with the children. (Remember, we are trying to be a go-between elementary and middle school.) But we do notify parents when the children reach the 90 points and 80 points.

Behavior Management Policy Each strike is 2 points deducted from conduct grade. Your child will be responsible for giving themselves strikes. They do this by recording the misconduct in a log.

Behavior Management Policy Per day: One strike = warning Two strikes = silent lunch Three strikes = note home Four strikes = office referral

AREAS OF CONCERN The following are areas in which your child will receive strikes or events in which you may be notified about: _ Excessive Talking _ Disturbs others _ Lack of Effort _ Inattentive _ Disrespectful to others _ Bad attitude _ Excessive tardies _ Excessive absences _ Not prepared for class _ Does not complete work on time _ Incomplete assignments _ Missing assignments _ Poor test scores _ Request a parent conference _ Staying seated _ Inappropriate materials _ Not following directions_ Misbehaving in hallway/restroom

Homework Homework assignments are a continuation of classwork. They will be considered late if not ready for class the next day. I do consider it the students’ responsibility to write down their assignments. I am willing to initial what they have written, but it will be their responsibility to write the assignments down. I strongly advise using my website if there are any questions.

Projects We are a school that is on grade level, but we enrich our curriculum by studying archaeology, working in the science lab, taking technology classes, and incorporating projects into the normal curriculum.

Projects A project is considered late if it is not in the room by 8:10 a.m. the day it is due. Students will not be allowed to call parents if they have forgotten, and 10 points will be deducted for each day the project is late.

Grades: The following is the grading scale for all subjects : A B C D F 59-0

We are looking forward to a GREAT school!
