Travelers and artists help spread the Renaissance throughout Europe Development of the printing press was a giant step in spreading ideas For the first time ever thousands of people could read books and share ideas

By 700 papermaking had spread from China to the Middle East to Europe European factories were making paper by 1300 Replaced traditional animal skin ($ effective) In mid 1400’s Johann Gutenberg developed a printing that used moveable type

First printed book was the bible in the Latin language in 1455 Bible began to be translated into common languages The church fought against this As a result, people wanted to learn to read and began to crave education

Italy People come from all over to study By 1500’s most teachers are humanists Students took ideas back with them home (north) Over time many students become teachers Women Many noble families educate daughters at home Encouraged young women to study classical literature, philosophy and the arts Often became powerful political figures

 Scholars in the north begin to study history  Focus on Greece, Rome and Christianity  They combo the two and create Christian Humanism  Many people in the north felt that the church was corrupted and needed reform

Was a priest that wrote “The Praise of Folly” in 1509 In this book he criticized corrupt clergy Also wanted to get rid of church rituals he found to be meaningless Emphasized devotion to God and teaching of Jesus

 Painted realistic people with physical flaws  Painted objects (rocks, flowers etc) very detailed  Painted scenes from daily life

Many writers chose to poke fun at the ideas of the middle ages Mocked the values of the time period William Shakespeare wrote more than 30 comedies, tragedies and histories Many of his works are still taught and studied in schools across the country
