0-3 Addition and Subtraction with Integers Goals: Add and subtract integers Use addition and subtraction to solve real life problems *
Vocabulary Opposites – two points that are the same distance from zero. Absolute Value – distance from zero (never negative)
Opposites Find the opposite of each number:
Absolute value Find the absolute value of each number:
Rules of Addition Same sign (both positive or both negative) ▫Add the absolute value of the two numbers and keep the sign EX: = -7 Different sign (one positive, one negative) ▫Subtract the number with the smaller absolute value from the number with the larger absolute value, and use the sign of the number with the larger absolute value. EX: 7 + (-3) = = -3
Examples (-6) (-8) (-6) (-2) (-2) = 3 = -4 = -12 = -4 = 6 = 0
Subtraction Rule Add the opposite: ▫5 – 3 means 5 + (-3) = 2 ▫-6 – 8 means -6 + (-8) = -14 ▫10 – (-13) means = 23 ▫-16 – (-9) means = -7
Examples 1.-4 – – – – (-6) – – (-13) = -7 = -1 = 6 = 4 = -37 = 38
Examples 1.3 – (-4) – – – (-18) 3.-5 – (-3) + 4 – – (-3) – 6 = 13 = 37 = 1 = -1
