Modernist Poetry Robert Frost

Background Early life as a farmer Farming failed to provide sufficient support, moved his family to England. His time as a farmer and love of nature influenced his poetry for life, becoming the focal point of many of his works.

Success Received more awards than any other twentieth century poet Was chosen as the poetry consultant to the Library of Congress. One of the most well known and beloved poets of his time and is widely read today.

Form Wrote in blank verse or unrhymed iambic pentameter. o Each line has a basic pattern of five pairs of syllables, with each pair made up of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable.

Analysis After reading your assigned poem, ask yourself the following questions and record your answers on a sheet of paper. What does this poem really mean? What is the theme or message of the poem? Use a line from the text to support. Finally, EXPLAIN your poem to your partner. Allow them to read over your poem and then explain your analysis to them. Allow them to note important details Be sure to explain it to your partner in a way that they can understand using language and comparisons that you know will make sense to them.

Comparison Finally COMPARE your poems using your graphic organizer template. Explain the similarities and differences you find in the space provided. We will discuss the differences as a class.
