Presentation transcript:

◦ The arts ◦ Cultural enrichment ◦ Tolerance ◦ Education ◦ Social cohesion ◦ Language ◦ Food

 The arts bring diversity to a wide audience of people e.g. films and music  Museums and exhibitions give people an understanding of cultures from around the world. This includes the past as well as today  Plays and theatre show other cultures

 Music – musicians work together from different cultures, races to form new music and mixtures of music.  How have the arts affected you?

 In a recent survey in Britain Chow Mein was voted the favourite food with Chicken Tikka Massala  People now enjoy spicy foods and this is partly due to our multi-cultural society and the fact people are travelling to different countries.

 Health care professionals should as service users about food likes and dislikes as well as what they can and cannot eat to respect diversity

 Diverse cultures are included in the national curriculum  Schools and colleges include studies in lots of languages and cultures  Education has benefited from people from different background becoming managers and so making positive changes in relation to diversity

 Equality, diversity and rights training in the health and social care profession has increased and become part of all professional training.  All organisations are required by law to train staff in equality, diversity and rights which is usually done at induction  Education is important in helping to get rid of ignorance about diversity.

 Learning another language can be beneficial  Interpretation is seen as a career in health and social care  Many young people now learn a different language to GCSE level and above

 Difference has to be accepted  We have to care for people who may be making decisions we do not necessarily agree with.

 Tolerance is very important in health and social care.  People may have different views from you which we have to accept as we are all individuals.  You have to be mature and professional when working with colleagues and helping people even though you may not want to or agree with them.

 This is also called community cohesion and is where a community (social group) sticks together (cohesion)  Belonging to a community is very important to human behaviour as it provides a safe and understanding environment, and a group that sticks together

 Working in diverse health and social care teams requires each member to respect all the others in the team and to value each person as an individual.

 All social and cultural benefits will bring about cultural enrichment through diversity this will ◦ Improve life for everyone ◦ Improve conditions and life for those working in health and social care ◦ Improve the care of those accessing health and social care provision
