 The ISS  Practicals, Notes Life aboard as the greatest collaboration of the Space Race.  Use the ISS Resource kit which gives practicals, information etc. 02/12/2011Espace Skills Course Page 2

What is the ISS?  The ISS is a satellite orbiting the earth and was made by at least 5 different space agencies. A satellite is an object orbiting a planet. The Earth only has one natural satellite, the Moon. The ISS orbits 400km above the Earth and will allow an almost permanent human presence in space for the next 10 to 15 years. The initial stand for the International Space Station and it is basically a laboratory in space and a home to 7 astronauts for a prolonged period of time. 02/12/2011Espace Skills Course Page 3

 The Station is around 100m in length and 80m in width.[1] Overall it spans across an area as big as a football pitch. The Station is so big it had to be assembled in space, as there are no rockets big enough to transport it. The first of the four labs to be sent into space was the Russian “Zvezda” (Star). Then one year later, in 2001, the American “Destiny” was launched and in 2004 The Japanese “Kibo” (Hope) and the British “Columbus”. 02/12/2011Espace Skills Course Page 4

Tracking the ISS  With the Internet it is easy to track the ISS. Simply type “ISS tracking” into Google and you are bombarded with websites all tracking the ISS. The ones below include some of the best sites.  ng ng  _missions/index.html _missions/index.html  /12/2011 Espace Skills Course Page 6

 I used Heavens Above to find out when we could see it above.comwww.heavens- above.com  Use the following steps to show when the ISS and other satellites are next visible in a certain area. 02/12/2011Espace Skills Course Page 7

Step 1: Call up the Heavens above website and click on “from database” in Configuration. 02/12/2011Espace Skills Course Page 8

Step 2: Select the country, we’re listed under the United Kingdom. 02/12/2011Espace Skills Course Page 9

Step 3: Type in the place you wish to view from, you’ll be surprised at how many towns and villages are included. 02/12/2011Espace Skills Course Page 10

Step 4: Click on the blue hyperlink for your town 02/12/2011Espace Skills Course Page 11

Step 5: Choose the satellite you wish to observe. 02/12/2011Espace Skills Course Page 12 Remember or Note The lower the number next to the date, the brighter the object will appear in the sky

Step 6: This gives you a 10 day prediction of when you will be able to see it. (This doesn’t allow for poor weather!) 02/12/2011Espace Skills Course Page 13

Activity Time I spend doing this / what I do Time an Astronaut spends doing this / what they do Sleeping8 hours Working 5.5 hours in school 1 hour homework 8 hours. 4 hours on experiments and the rest on maintenance. Exercise0.75 hours4 hours Eating1.5 hours Quite a while, depending on what else they have to do. Personal Hygiene20 mins A long time as there are straps you have to put on and lots of buttons to press every time nature calls. Number of sunrises in 24 hours 116 Playing I like to read, play Nintendo, watch TV, write a story and be on the computer Astronauts like looking out of the window at the Earth, photograph the Earth, play with M&Ms (their favourite sweet). Some take instruments up to the ISS. Others watch films or listen to music WeekendsAll of Sat and SunSat – only 4 hours of work. Sun – day off. Socialising Varies according to day and company. 2 hours max for video communications with families. This time is a favourite with the astronauts 02/12/2011 Page 14
