The BIG Question: What are the eight different types of words?

The BIG Question: How can I identify and use adjectives?

An adjective can come before the noun it describes. They contacted many doctors. Everyone worried about this boy. The Andersons lived in a magnificent house. An adjective can follow a form of the verb to be. Hewitt was teeny-weeny compared to his parents. The doctor was famous for his work. The Andersons were distressed about Hewitt’s size.

The young baby was noisy. The tired boy was nervous about falling asleep. Many young kids love to ask questions. The tall, friendly man is my dad. Mrs. Gibson gave us many important directions. The bright, colorful flowers were just planted.

Add –er to most short adjectives to compare something with one other thing. Brittany is taller than Joe. A fairy tale is longer than a fable. The cat was quicker than my dog.

Add –est to most short adjectives to compare something with two or more things. Amy is the shortest person in her class. This knife is the sharpest knife in the drawer. That building is the oldest building in town.

When an adjective ends in y, change the y to an i before you add er or est. My mom is funnier than my dad. My little sister is the silliest person I know. The first problem was the easiest math problem on the test.

Use more with longer adjectives to compare two things. An elephant is more enormous than a buffalo. I think roses are more beautiful than daisies. The math test was more difficult than the science test.

Use most with longer adjectives to compare one thing with two or more things. This is the most delicious cheesecake ever! Cats are the most curious animals. I think the rose is the most beautiful flower of all.

Which is correct? Those shoes are the expensivest shoes in the store. Those shoes are the more expensive shoes in the store. Those shoes are the most expensive shoes in the store.

Which is correct? Alecia was the most beautiful girl in the valley. Alecia was the beautifuler girl in the valley. Alecia was the more beautiful girl in the Valley.

Which is correct? Jacob is creativer than his brother. Jacob is more creative than his brother. Jacob is most creative than his brother.

Which is correct? Roses are the most wonderful flowers of all. Roses are the wonderfulest flowers of all. Roses are the more wonderful flowers of all.

Which is correct? Some people think cats are most intelligent than other pets. Some people think cats are intelligenter than other pets. Some people think cats are more intelligent than other pets.
