Why Use Public Transit? 2 Can you think of any benefits?

Why Use Public Transit? 3 Public Transportation Benefits Public transportation in the United States is a crucial part of the solution to the nation’s economic, energy, and environmental challenges - helping to bring a better quality of life. In increasing numbers, people are using public transportation and local communities are expanding public transit services. Quick Facts Americans board public transportation 36 million times each weekday. Public transportation is a $61 billion industry that employs more than 400,000 people. More than 7,200 organizations provide public transportation in the United States.

Why Use Public Transit? 4 Public Transportation Enhances Personal Opportunities Public transportation provides mobility and freedom for people from every walk of life. Public transportation gives people options to get to: work, school, friends, or doctor’s office. Public Transportation Saves Fuel, Reduces Congestion Public transportation reduces traffic congestion. Public transportation use in the United States saves 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline annually.

Why Use Public Transit? 5 Public Transportation Reduces Carbon Footprint Public transit use in the USA reduces carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons annually. This is equivalent to Washington DC, New York City, Atlanta, Denver, and Los Angeles combined stopping use of electricity. One person with a 20-mile round trip commute who switches from driving to public transit can reduce his or her daily carbon emissions by 20 pounds, or more than 4,800 pounds in a year. CO 2

Public Transportation Provides Economic Opportunities Every $1 invested in public transportation generates approximately $4 in economic returns. Home values performed 42% better if they were located near public transportation. Why Use Public Transit? 6 Public Transportation Saves Money Using public transportation is the quickest way to beat high gas prices. A two-person household can save more than $10,000 a year by downsizing to one car. Public Transportation Is Safe If you ride the bus, you are about 60 times safer than in an automobile in the US, according to recent finding in the Journal of Public Transportation.
