Causes and Effects of 20 th Century Wars TopicPrescribed Content Causes of War Economic, ideological, political, territorial and other causes Short vs Long Term Causes Practices of War and their impact on the Outcome Types of war: civil wars; wars between states; guerrilla wars Technological developments; theatres of war – air, land, sea The extent of the mobilization of human and economic resources The influence and/or involvement of foreign powers Effects of War The successes and failures of peacemaking Territorial Changes Political repercussions Economic, social, and demographic impact Topics for Detailed Study Africa: Algerian War (Gulf War) Americas: Falklands/Malvinas War Asia: Vietnam War (Chinese Civil War) “Cross-Regional” Wars: WWI & WWII

What is historiography? History is not static! It is dynamic, debatable, and constantly changing. Two historians looking at the same event and facts will arrive at two different conclusions. The study of how history changes over time The study of different interpretations of history For example – when studying U.S. imperialism: 1900’s: necessary to create sphere of influence = world power 2000’s: restrictive of individual rights = oppressive The study of historians’ methods What sources do they use? Why? Background? What biases are present? The history of history In IB, analyzing OPCVL is helpful in understanding historiography!

Appointment Discussion Activity: 20 th Century Warfare You will participate in a discussion activity to evaluate the pros/cons of warfare. For this appointment discussion activity, you will discuss four questions with four different people. The purpose of this is to DISCUSS!!! Right now, you are just going to find partners for each of your four appointments. Follow my directions! Do NOT move ahead!

Appointment #1 Why do countries go to war? Are there good AND bad reasons? Is there such thing as a “just” war? Give examples!

Appointment #2 Is all fair in warfare? Should limits be placed on weapons or strategies used in war? Do you agree there should be “rules of war?”

Appointment #3 What factors make wars popular or unpopular with the general public? What role can the media play in this perception?

Appointment #4 The German philosopher Emmanuel Kant argued that “one’s natural state is a state of war.” What does he mean by this? Is war more “natural” than peace? To what extent do you agree?

October 27, 2016 No bellwork today! We will start by finishing yesterday’s bellwork discussion. Get out your bellwork and appointment discussion worksheet!
