ArtStar / ArtStarLite Bob Anderson IOTA Meeting: 29 JULY 2016

ArtStar and the newly developed ArtStar Lite … Desk top system for testing video cameras used in occultations Desk top system for testing frame grabbers Camera response and frame grabber response intertwined Two cameras (WAT120N+ WAT910HX) Two ‘frame grabbers’ (DFG/USB2Pro StarTech/SVID2USB2)

Schematic view of ArtStar system

Some of the bits and pieces that go into ArtStar

ArtStar light tube with Wat910 attached to optics stack (yardstick and fiber optic cable in foreground)

ArtStar in full operation

ArtStar ‘targets’ : a simulated star and an extended area source ‘star’ ‘bar’

Pulse-width-modulation (PWM) illumination, synchronized to field pulses from the VTI

Camera/frame grabber response to linearly increased LED pulse width (ramp in time — LED pulse width starts at zero and incremented at each successive field until max pulse reached, then starts over) W120N+

Response curve that results if LED current is ramped from zero to max (demonstrating that LED light output versus current is non-linear)

First ‘surprise’ — Wat910/DFG response to linear PWM ramp Second ‘surprise’ — Wat910/StarTech response to linear PWM ramp

Watec engineering confirmation that ArtStar measured response curve is correct

Most frame-grabbers produce a compressed video. In fact, it’s quite difficult to find a frame-grabber that will produce an uncompressed video stream. The DFG/USB2pro frame-grabber does output an uncompressed video. The SVID2USB2 frame-grabber produces an mp4 compressed video. One of the important questions to be answered is whether this compression affects occultation timing.

ArtStar fine-pitch image positioning screws (2 of 3 shown here)

ArtStar finely focussed ‘star’ manually drifted across the ccd array

Hypothetical response of a single pixel

A portion of a ccd array showing its ‘waffle’ response pattern

A gaussian psf (approximately 4 pixel FWHM)

The psf of the previous slide showing the ‘waffle’ response pattern at one sub-pixel position

Plot of min/max/average as psf is positioned at 100 sub-pixel positions

Solving the ‘too sharp star image’ in ArtStar The ArtStar ‘star’ image needed to have a more realistic FWHM. To accomplish this, I had precision holes laser drilled in stainless steel aperture disks that could be placed at the front surface of the camera lens, replacing the built in aperture stops of the lens. Holes of size 500, 750, 1000, 1500, and 2000 microns were tried. The 2000 micron aperture produced a psf of about 6 pixels FWHM and was used for most of the measurements involving ‘star’ images. A reasonable simulation optically, but does it accurately reflect a telescope PSF that results from ‘seeing’ conditions rather than optics?

A more detailed report on ArtStar is available at … yahoo.groups.com IOTAoccultations file folder: Light-curve-analysis-papers (andersonbob1024) file: ArtStar-device-report.pdf If you don’t have access to that group, I can you a copy. My is:

ArtStar simplified: ArtStarLite

ArtStarLite mechanical components C-mount to 1.25” eyepiece adapter holding two paper disks that act as diffusers (wrapped with enough masking tape to provide snug press fit into PVC adapter) PVC plumbing fitting ultra bright red LED & mounting plate

ArtStarLite: diffuser assembly built in a C-mount to 1.25” eyepiece adapter View from camera sideView from LED side copy paper disksecond copy paper disk black neoprene foam (holds and separates disks) (and acts as light seal)

Assembled ArtStarLite attached to Watec 910 camera black modeling clay for light seal

ArtStarLite ‘images’

Response curve of Watec910 through DFG frame grabber It shows that the response is ‘linear’ within the illumination range selected … but the response curve does not go through zero !!

Study by Hristo Pavlov - star field imaged through red filter unsaturated aperture photometry vertical axis - star magnitudes from catalog horizontal axis - instrumental magnitudes Slope expected to be 1.00 but was Why?

ArtStar magdrop test on W910 with star image (psf approx 6 FWHM)

ArtStarLite magdrop test

AGC (Automatic Gain Control) In the camera, AGC acts on image In the frame-grabber, it acts on the total composite video signal

Composite video diagram (for color TV signal)

AGC response test: the composite video signal has been run through an attenuator. At the start of light curve acquisition, the attenuation is 0.9 Then, every 100 frames or so, the attenuation is changed: 4 steps down to 0.5, then 4 steps back to 0.9 DFG/USB2pro (Imaging Sources) This frame-grabber has a very effective AGC SVID2USB2 (StarTech) This frame-grabber has no AGC

1.We’ve provided a brief description of the ArtStar testing system … 2.Introduced ArtStarLite, a mechanically simplified version of ArtStar … 3.Shown several ‘surprises’ … a.unexpected ‘kinks’ in the Watec910 response curve b.effects of a ‘too small’ star image c.an otherwise linear camera response that doesn’t pass through zero d.provided a reasonable explanation of Hristo Pavlov’s magdrop plot e.but none of the ‘surprises’ affect timing — only photometry And that concludes this presentation. In summation, during this presentation …
