Scripps Ranch High School College Courses Informational Meeting June 1, 2016

Scripps Ranch and Miramar College Partnerships: Fall 2016 Community College classes are taught during the regular school day Classes are taught by College faculty and students earn transferrable college credits upon successful completion of the course PLUS Students will be receiving: 2 Weighted Credits per college course on their High School Transcript.

Benefits of Enrolling in College Courses while in High School All courses are FREE! Includes all related fees and materials. Earn college units, some fully transferrable to UC/CSUs, without having to pass an AP exam. Earn high school credit with a weighted grade for each course Most courses meet 2-3 days per week, allowing students study time on the off days. Courses are conveniently taught on the High School campus. No need for student to be concerned with transportation to college campus. Student learns the structure and rigor of college courses before entering first year of postsecondary college.

Potential Risks of Enrolling in College Courses while in High School A “D” or “F” or “W” (Withdraw) grade are permanently reflected on the student’s college transcript and the student may be placed on academic probation at the college level plus financial aid. Students must be mentally, emotionally and academically prepared and ready for college rigor. Low grades can negatively impact high school GPA and could affect 4-year college admission decisions. Students are expected to complete rigorous course work, which may impact time available for extracurricular activities. Students are expected to attend classes Poor grades can also impact CIF and NCAA eligibility

Enrollment Process: Student applies to Miramar Community College online  Student gets Miramar CSID # Three Forms: 1.Participation Criteria Form 2.Parent/Student Acknowledgement Form 3.San Diego Community College Part-Time HS Student Form

Apply to Miramar:

Participation Criteria: Student & Parent Signature Needed

Student Participation Criteria School counselor will review final grades to ensure student is qualified to enroll in class – Some students are on waitlist Minimum HS GPA of 2.5 or higher Must maintain a 2.0 in college coursework Performance on applicable placement test determines college coursework placement

Parent & Student Acknowledgement Form: Student & Parent Signature Needed

San Diego Unified School District Community College Parent/Guardian and Student Acknowledgement  I commit to being in the classes on the day they start  I understand my school will provide the required texts. Any texts checked out to me must be returned at the end of the term or I will incur fines.  I understand that college coursework is difficult and I am ready to commit myself to that work. I will not accept a seat and drop it because the work is too hard. I will work closely with a counselor to choose coursework in which I can succeed, and I will stay in contact with a counselor.  I understand that my performance in college can either support or hinder my ability to get into college when I graduate. If I earn D/F grades or withdraw from classes they are a part of my permanent college record.

Supports Available for students enrolling in college courses  Professor office hours  Some classes do not meet everyday, so students are able to form study groups

What is next? If still interested in taking college classes: – Apply to Miramar online – Turn in all 3 forms completely filled out to the counseling office by WEDNESDAY, June 8 th. Reminder: – Grades – Waiting list
