EERE TECHNOLOGY-TO-MARKET, DOE Johanna Wolfson Director, Technology-to-Market DOE Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE) July 13, 2016

A Conventional View of the Innovation Ecosystem (This works for capital-light products with short development cycles.)

Breakdowns occur for capital-intensive innovations Finance won’t enter without market buy-in Hardware development needs over longer development cycles exceed available capital Market is less likely to adopt disruptive innovations Finance won’t enter without near-term payback

What if we treat the Innovation Ecosystem as a real system? Early industry buy-in triggers capital flow Access to physical resources yields capital- efficiency Increased capital flow allows for disruptive innovation pool

Two Complementary Tech-to-Market Approaches at DOE PROJECT BY PROJECT Put added horsepower behind the most promising projects to get them toward market readiness. ECOSYSTEM-BASED Build a better landscape for the pathway to market so that the best ideas have the best shot at market impact.

What We Do TECH-TO-MARKET PROGRAMS: Seed clean energy entrepreneurship and launch new ventures. Provide funding, resources, and services to great innovators and promising ideas. Connect technology development to the market to achieve customer traction and maximum impact. We’re focused on finding and supporting the most effective ecosystem models to achieve these goals. EERE’s Tech-to-Market is facilitating a better innovation ecosystem for clean energy.

Lab-Corps HOW IT WORKS An entrepreneurial training program for Lab researchers. 8 National Labs (led by NREL) assemble, and train teams to identify private sector opportunities for commercializing their clean energy technologies. Cohorts 1 & 2: 28 National Lab Teams graduated Cohort 3: Underway, Summer 2016 GOAL Empower National Laboratory researchers to successfully transfer innovative technologies into the marketplace.
