Welcome to the Framework Coherence Team August 24, 2016 Stacy Drum and Kelly Rotter Please do the following: Sign in Sign up for snacks Grab a book and a binder Make your name tent

Getting to Know You... Take something out of your bag/purse that says something about you Share your name, school, and grade level Share why you chose the item in your bag

Objectives We will understand the purpose and goals of the Framework Coherence Team We will explore the Framework and discuss how it can be used at our sites

Welcome! Agenda: Fill out paperwork, get supplies Welcome, Introductions Why are we here? The Framework and the Continuum Connections Wishes and Wants

Color Question Brainstorming Green: imagination, ingenuity, possibility What might happen if…. Red: facts, figures, data How many? How much? Blue: judgments, opinions, values, needs Why is this… What’s the best way to…

Imagine this... We all work from a common place with our literacy instruction. Count off by 3’s At your assigned chart, brainstorm as many questions as possible Rotate when alerted to do so Review the new chart and add to it Round 2: Go from chart to chart and circle questions that seem most relevant to the issue Move back to your groups, whole group “noticings”

What is Your Definition of a Continuum?

The Continuum of Literacy The Continuum provides a way to look for specific evidence of learning from prekindergarten through grade eight, and across seven curricular areas.

Continuum Investigation: “Swipe Right!” Look through your Continuum book. You have 7 minutes to come up with your top 3 swipes and share with a neighbor.

Framework Scavenger Hunt

The Continuum and the WCSD Literacy Framework What is the Continuum of Literacy? It provides a way to look for specific evidence of learning from prekindergarten through grade eight, and across curricular areas. Created through examination of research and teacher feedback. What is the K-5 Literacy Framework? It provides a way to support effective Tier 1 literacy practices - listing resources, methods, anchor standards, and professional learning based on the Continuum’s curricular areas. Created through examination of research and teacher feedback.

How We Can Use and Connect the Continuum and the Framework

To Plan and Reflect (Start with the Anchor Standards) Continuum of Literacy Teaches for behaviors and understandings across and within grade levels WCSD Framework Finds resources, methods, and professional learning that match those behaviors, understandings, and standards

A Guide for Curriculum Planning Continuum of Literacy Use to plan grade-level literacy and language learning A starting point to think very specifically about goals and expectations WCSD Framework Use to plan grade-level literacy and language learning A resource to plan curriculum, based on goals and expectations

To Link Assessment to Instruction Continuum of Literacy Can be used as a bridge between assessment data and the specific teaching that students need WCSD Framework Available resources, methods, and professional learning that can be matched with specific teaching that students need

To Guide Intervention Continuum of Literacy A tool to find the specific understandings that can guide intervention decisions WCSD Framework Resources and methods can be differentiated to guide intervention decisions for students in the Tier 1 reading deficient group

The Bottom Line Continuum of Literacy A conceptual tool to think constructively about work in literacy. WCSD Framework A tool to help build a comprehensive literacy curriculum.

Looking Ahead... Over the next month: Think about which curricular components from the Framework you are teaching now Star the 2 curricular components on the Framework that you feel the most comfortable teaching. Take your lesson plans for the week and label which components you used. Bring your lesson plans to the next meeting on September 28 th.

How Can We Support You? After each FCT meeting, we will ask you to fill out a ½ sheet if you would like us to come in and support you in the classroom.

Wishes and Wants What wishes do you have surrounding the Continuum and the Framework? Coherence Team? What do you want from us? What supports? Needs? Materials?

What's Coming Up? Our next meeting is on September 28 th Please bring your binder with your name tent, your marked lesson plans, and snacks to share if it is your day. Next time we will be exploring phonological awareness (K-2), phonics, and word study This PowerPoint will be available on the C&I section of the WCSD website
