Welcome To Subtraction Wednesday 5 th October 2016 If you can dream it, you can do it!

Lower School Methods Number lines are used to show jumps as they count back in Year – 7 =

Lower School Methods They also use number lines to work out difference by counting on. The difference between 11 and 7 =

Practical Resources Bead Strings help children to physically move beads along the bar.

In Year 2 children use number lines to work out a small difference by counting up. 42 – 39 = Try this with a bead string

In Year 2 children use known number facts and place value to subtract. 37 – 12 = Try:

In Year 3 children continue to work out difference for numbers that are close together. Counting on is easier! Children work out the difference by counting on using a number line. 102 – 97 Work out 104 – 95 counting on with a number line.

Children also learn to answer more complex subtraction questions. 84 – 56 =

In Year 3 children use formal methods for subtraction As well as subtractions that involve borrowing. We use dienes to help the children understand. 472 – 239 =

In Year 4 children go on to decimals on a number line. 6.1 – 0.4 =

Children continue to use number lines in Year 4, as well as formal subtraction Formal subtraction with at least four digits – 2684 = 3783

Year 5 and 6 Formal subtraction: 2932 – 1457 = 1457 Try this one: 2963 – 1279 =
