Essential Question: What can color tell us?

The Color Wheel The color wheel is a tool that shows us how colors are related to each other.

The Color Wheel Primary colors are the 3 basic colors that can be used to make all other colors: red, yellow & blue.

The Color Wheel Secondary colors are the 3 colors made by combining 2 primary colors: orange, green & violet.

The Color Wheel Tertiary colors are all the colors made by combining a primary color with a secondary color.

The Color Wheel We can use this tool to remind us how to create colors when mixing paint, ink, markers, etc.

Brain Break What is your favorite color?

So where is white on the color wheel? White is actually the absence of all color. … what about black? Black is the absence of light.

Why & how can colors have meaning? Colors mean different things to different people. Culture, religion, experiences & environment all mold your meaning of colors. The colors red, yellow & orange are warm colors because we relate them to the colors of fire & the sun. These colors are proven to cause excitement. Blue, green & purple are known as cool colors. We associate these colors with water & nature. Cool colors are considered to be soothing. Earth tones is a term used to describe the group of colors we associate with dirt. Brown is not on the color wheel, but it can be created by combining red & green.

Essential Question: What can color tell us? What is the artist trying to say with his use of color? Why is (blue) your favorite color? What colors make you happy or sad? Why? How can you use color to send a message in your artwork?
