Who we are: Visual Air Productions (Pty) Ltd was founded in 1997 and has been the forerunner and innovator in manufacturing and using Remotely Piloted & Full Size Aircraft for the supply of aerial cinematography, video, photography and data capture.

RPAS Regulation and Safety

REGULATIONS in South Africa On 1 July 2015 South Africa implemented Civil Aviation Regulations CAR 101 for RPAS. To commercially operate RPA’s (Remotely Piloted Aircraft) or known as “Drones” or “UAV’s” in South Africa the requirements are a valid: 1. ASL – Air Service Licence. (Department of Transport). 2. ROC – RPAS Operators Certificate. 3. RLA – RPAS Letter of Approval. 4. RPL – Remote Pilot Licence. 5. CofR – Certificate of Registration. Public Liability (minimum of R per aircraft) and insurance is only valid for a licensed operator with all of above (aviation insurance).

Basic operating limits set by the regulation: Unless approved by the SACAA no Remotely Piloted Aircraft may fly/operate: 1. More than 400 feet (120 meters) above the ground. 2. More than 500 meters away from the pilot (line of sight). 3. Closer than 10km from an airport (any registered aerodrome, airstrip, helipad, etc.). 4. In controlled, restricted or prohibited airspace. 5. Closer than 50m from people. 6. Closer than 50m from buildings and roads. DO NOT, through act or omission, endanger the safety of another aircraft or person therein or any person or property through negligent flying/operation of Remotely Piloted Aircraft, or toy aircraft.

ASL and ROC REQUIREMENTS To commercially operate RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) in South African requires a valid ASL (Air Service License) ACT No. 115 of 1990 and International ACT No. 60 of ROC (RPAS Operating Certificate) in terms of Civil Aviation Regulations CAR 101 of Holder of above requires qualified: 1. Chief Executive Officer 2. Security Manager 3. Aircraft Manager (RMT - RPAS Maintenance Technician in our case) 4. Air Service Safety Officer 5. Flight OPS Manager with RPL (chief pilot in our case) 6. Quality Assurance Manager (Monthly QA audits & 3 in 1 st year, the 2 per year by CAA) 7. RPAS Pilots with valid RPL’s. 8. Qualified Payload Operators / Cameramen. All staff must have valid Aviation Security Awareness Certificates and full background checks. QMS, SMS and OPS manual inductions. Valid RED Tickets for mine and power station operators. Survival Offshore Training (SOT) for Oil and Gas.
