As of May 2010, G-mail rose to the third most popular websites in the United States. In a survey from eROI, when high school and college students picked their provider, G-mail was their favorite. It easy to learn and efficient for both students and faculty in a fast-pace college environment. Did you know?

Goals Explain how to use the , chat and call phone features of Gmail (gmail.com)

Objectives Slide By the end of this instructional presentation, students and faculty will be able to access G-mail, create an account and send an without assistance from others. College of Education students and faculty will be able to use the chat features of G-mail to send messages to their online contacts without any other type of online support. At the end of this presentation, students and faculty from the College of Education will be able to use the call feature of G-mail to successfully place a call to one of their contacts without any additional assistance.

You may already know… As a current student or faculty member, you most likely already know how to use other e- mail sites (Yahoo Mail, AOL, dukes.jmu) or chat features (AIM, Facebook). This knowledge will help you to learn how to use G-mail faster and more efficiently

Access G-mail Click on Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, etc and type in gmail.com

Create an Account Once on the home page, click on “create an account”

Create an Account Enter personal information

Login Enter username and password into the login screen

Send an On the left hand side of the screen, click on “create message” Enter a gmail address in the “To” field, a subject title in the “Subject” field and enter the body of your message Then hit Send

Chat Feature Once you sent your , their name will pop up under the chat feature If they have a green circle next to their name, click on their name, type a message and wait for the reply.

Call Feature Go to the left hand side of the screen above the call feature. A little screen will pop up on the right side where you will have to download the voice plug-in. This will take you to another window where you will be asked to “install voice and video chat”.

Call Feature Save the file to your computer. Once it is installed, dial a number into the screen. You need to make sure you have a microphone/headset installed to be able to talk to the person on the other end of the line It’s FREE!

Summary In this presentation, you learned how to access, create an account and login on G-mail. You were then able to add a contact to your address book and send them an . Also, you were able to chat a contact as well as place a phone call with them.
