09/05/2006NWCLUG: LW SF 2006 Recap3 Intro ● LinuxWorld is an bi-annual event that occurs in Boston and San Francisco ● The event consists of conferences and an expo consisting of a large number of booths represeting Linux-related companies and projects. ● During this year's event there were several “keynote” speeches that were given throughout the course of the show. ● This year's San Francisco show was at the Moscone Center

09/05/2006NWCLUG: LW SF 2006 Recap4 Interesting Keynotes ● Lawrence Lessig – Opening Keynote – Stressed importance of participatory culture – Current environment is legally hostile to a "read-write" culture – Fair use is not piracy ● Motorola's Greg Besio – Mobile Linux Keynote – Goal: at least half of Motorola's smartphones will run Linux – Extend Linux to midrange phones (ex: ROKR E2) – Committed to support native Linux apps on phones ● XenSource's Peter Levine – Virtualization's impact on IT departments

09/05/2006NWCLUG: LW SF 2006 Recap5.org Pavilion Booths ● Creative Commons ● Debian ● Eclipse Foundation ● Electronic Frontier Foundation ● Etherboot Project ● Fedora Project ● Free Software Foundation ● Free Standards Group ● Gentoo Linux ● GNOME Foundation ● Joomla! ● K Desktop Environment (KDE) ● Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP.org) ● The Linux Test Project ● openSUSE.org ● Open Source Software Institute ● PostgreSQL Project ● SugarForge.ORG ● The FreeBSD Project ● ubuntu ● X.Org Foundation

09/05/2006NWCLUG: LW SF 2006 Recap6 My Impressions ● No Redhat Booth - Largest corporate Linux company skips the show floor ● Minimal Nokia presence (I did see the 770 lead at the Motorola after-party) ● Mainly server/enterprise-related companies attending – small amount of embedded Linux ● Apple at LinuxWorld? They really are trying to get that server market! How about some Quicktime/iTunes support? ● Novell's checking booth and Slashdot's lounge in the.org pavilion were really cool ideas ● Interesting annoucements: Suse preload on Thinkpads, Java open sourcing
