MODULE 2 INSTRUCTOR: BRENDA TAYLOR Welcome to Early Calendar Visual Arts 1

What is Art? There is a video that you should look at about a baby sculpture. Do you think this is art? Why? Why not?

Preview it This folder gives you a brief look at what you will be doing in this module. It’s a really good way to get started and get a visual in your head.

Read and Explore What exactly is Art? This is the burning question for this module. Click on this site: &defl=en&q=define:art&sa=X&ei=gKgoTe3EM8Kql AeVg7DyAQ&sqi=2&ved=0CBMQkAE &defl=en&q=define:art&sa=X&ei=gKgoTe3EM8Kql AeVg7DyAQ&sqi=2&ved=0CBMQkAE Definitions of art from the web

Warm up Take an art survey – you will be asked to take a survey of what makes great art. You will also be asked to choose 2 artists that you would like to compete against each other to see which one is the greatest artist. Pretty cool! I, myself, chose Picasso and Kurt Cobain. Who do you think won? Click here for the survey. ml Click here to find out about the different kinds of art, artists, and reasons for creating art. ml

Create it Interview an Artist For this week's assignment you are going to: search out a VISUAL artist in your community and set up an interview with them. Try to interview the artist face-to-face. bring the list of questions (found in the folder), something to write with and a digital camera. ask as many questions as you think you need to ask if you can take a picture of the person, as well as a piece of their artwork. This should be uploaded in this assignment blog.

Create it cont. Make a Bumper Sticker “Art is …” Click on this link for a tutorial on creating a virtual bumper sticker: stickers-word.htmlhttp:// stickers-word.html Use the tutorial link to create a virtual bumper sticker that says "Art is _________________" (FILL IN THE BLANK) Save a copy of your bumper sticker. Send me a digital copy of your bumper sticker by clicking on the "2.4.2a Bumper Sticker Submission" on the main course page.

Create it Cont. Don’t forget to do the WIMBA assignment. We did not have a live class this week. Be sure to look at the Powerpoint for Module 2 and send me an with a summary of the presentation. This is worth 100 points.

Connect it What is art to you? Do a little research, and find one work that you think is good art and one piece that you feel is bad art (or not art at all). Why did you label each the way you did? Post your definition and your two pictures in the 2.5.1a What Is Art? Forum.

Critique it Go to the following links to gain an insight on art critiques: How to judge art: to-judge-art-five-qualities-you-can-critique/ to-judge-art-five-qualities-you-can-critique/ How to handle criticism: handle-artistic-criticism-learning-from-art-critics-artist- critiques/ handle-artistic-criticism-learning-from-art-critics-artist- critiques/ How to give a critique: art-critique-constructive-criticism-for-artists/ art-critique-constructive-criticism-for-artists/

Imagine it After looking at each of the links on the previous slide, you will go to the “what do you know about art?” forum, add a discussion thread, and answer the following questions in your forum post: Do you have any artistic experiences? Are you an artist? Do you have a friend who is an artist? If so, what type of artist are they? What more do you want to learn about art? In the subject line, be sure to type “what I know about art.”

Review it You will find a quick review of the module in this folder. Did you: explore the question: What is Art? create a virtual bumber sticker, “Art is …”? learn how to give constructive criticism, how to critique, and how to take criticism from others? post your experiences with art in a forum? summarize the Powerpoint presentation for Module 2 (no live class session this week)?

End of Module 2 Any questions? Have a great week!
