Notes – Jefferson and War of 1812

Thomas Jefferson’s Presidency Beat John Adams in a close election in Goal – to simplify the presidency, shrink the government and cut costs. States Rights, limit Federal Gov!

Changes in the Judicial Branch Marbury vs. Madison – established judicial review – the ability for the supreme court to find acts of Congress unconstitutional. Judicial Branch becomes equal with other two.

Westward Expansion Migration west of the Appalachians grew rapidly in the early 1800s. Louisiana Purchase – more than doubled the size of the U.S. - $15 million bought New Orleans and western Florida from the French(Hypocrite?)

Westward Expansion Lewis and Clark: President Jefferson asked them to lead an expedition to collect info. about unknown plants and animals and learn the cultures of Native Americans from the western territories. Sacajawea – served as interpreter and guide for them. Expedition lasted two years and four months wis--clark-expedition-charts-new- territory#lewis--clark-expedition- charts-new-territoryhttp:// wis--clark-expedition-charts-new- territory#lewis--clark-expedition- charts-new-territory

Causes of the War of 1812 British policy of impressment – seizing Americans at sea and “unpressing’ or drafting them into the British navy Chesapeake incident – British demanded entry onto this vessel – when refused they shot and killed 3 Americans and injured 18.

President Jefferson Responds Both France and Britain were taking our ships The U.S. declares an embargo – ban on exporting products to other countries.

More Trouble … Native Americans led by Tecumseh formed a confederacy to protect their land.

War of 1812 British begin to aid Tecumseh Americans discover this aid and the “war hawks” press for war with Britain as they call “On to Canada”

War of 1812 Newly elected Madison decides to go to war – Congress approves American troops were ill-equipped Native American tribes fought on both sides – depending on their loyalty British burn the Whitehouse

Andrew Jackson Battle of New Orleans

Johnny Horton 1959 #1 Song In 1814 we took a little trip Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip. We took a little bacon and we took a little beans And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans. [Chorus:] We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin. There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began to runnin' on Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. We looked down the river and we see'd the British come. And there must have been a hundred of'em beatin' on the drum. They stepped so high and they made the bugles ring. We stood by our cotton bales and didn't say a thing. [Chorus] Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise If we didn't fire our muskets 'til we looked 'em in the eye We held our fire 'til we see'd their faces well. Then we opened up with squirrel guns and really gave 'em... well [Chorus] Yeah, they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go. They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.** We fired our cannon 'til the barrel melted down. So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round. We filled his head with cannon balls, and powdered his behind And when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind. [Chorus] Yeah, they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go. They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.** tracks#battle%20of%20new%20orl eans
