The Country Begins to Grow

The United States in 1791

Moving Westward The Treaty of Paris moved the western border of the United States from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River. Many pioneers (people who first settle a place) began to move into areas west of the Appalachians Daniel Boone- American pioneer who became famous for his exploration of Kentucky Many territories (lands that belong to the government but are not a state and not represented in Congress) began to be settled Example-The Northwest Territory

The Louisiana Purchase Area bordered by Mississippi River, the Rocky Mountains, New Orleans and Canada Most important part was the port at New Orleans so that farmers could get products to markets April 30, The United States purchases Louisiana for $15 million More then doubled the size of the country making it one of the largest nations in the world

The Corps of Discovery President Jefferson asked Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead an expedition to explore the new land Their expedition group was called “The Corps of Discovery” In May of 1804 they left St. Louis and travelled northwest along the Missouri River

Lewis and Clark Along the way they were helped by an Indian named Sacagawea She helped guide them along the area around the Rocky Mountains November 1805-The Corps of Discovery reached the Pacific Ocean
