POLITICS AND THE NEW DEAL

THEODORE BILBO

Bilbo was involved in many scandals and accounts of voting fraud. Even with all the scandals, the people of Mississippi voted on him for senator and lieutenant governor. Bilbo became governor of Mississippi in He was a lot like Vardaman. He had some racist views, and he supported poor, white farmers.

HENRY WHITFIELD

Whitfield ran for governor against Bilbo in Whitfield expected to have the edge because women were voting for the first time. He won the election. He said that education was the state’s salvation

WHITFIELD AND BUSINESS Whitfield reversed many policies that had restricted big business.

WHITFIELD AND AFRICAN AMERICANS 1.Very strict on lynching laws 2.Spoke to black organizations 3.Visited and funded black schools 4.Welcomed them into his office 5.Listened to their problems

WHITFIELD AND BILBO Whitfield passed away in 1927, and Bilbo returned as governor. Bilbo is not as successful this time because the legislature ignored him, and the Great Depression hit in 1929.

THE GREAT MIGRATION Migration: The movement of people from one place to another. The Great Migration refers to the mass movement of African Americans from cities in the South to cities in the North. Why leave? 1.Poverty 2.Segregation 3.Better opportunities and more work in the North

FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT Elected president in Spent his first 100 days of the presidency concentrating on immediate relief for the country.

THE NEW DEAL New Deal: A series of programs passed during the administration of FDR designed to relieve the suffering from the Great Depression

THE NEW DEAL WPA (Works Progress Administration): Hired unemployed people to build much needed public projects such as roads, parks, and schools.

THE NEW DEAL CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps): Hired the unemployed to work on environmental projects such as planting trees and conserving the soil.

THE NEW DEAL AAA (Agricultural Adjustment Administration): Designed to help farmers get better equipment and more pay for their crops. Paid some farmers to stop planting on their land.
