Ch. 9 Hard Times And The Home Front ( ) The Great Depression What was it? Who was the President at the time? The Great Depression was a worldwide economic collapse. President Herbert Hoover CAUSES EFFECT The Great Depression Pres. Hoover and Gov. didn’t intervene enough (increased taxes, which hurt economy further) Black Tuesday: Stock Market Crash Bank Failures: Bad Banking Practices (too many risky loans to those who cannot pay them back) Overproduction of goods; high supply, low demand  surplus Too much personal debt: too many people using credit beyond their means

Use the primary source documents to identify three different ways in which The Great Depression affected people at this time. -** see primary source documents; answers may vary - The Dust Bowl Why did dust bowl migrants come to Washington state? What kinds of work did many of them find here? -To find new work and get away from unhealthy conditions -Fruit and vegetable pickers

As a response to The Great Depression, FDR & Congress created New Deal Programs to put people back to work. “Strength & Dignity of Common Men & Women” 1.Relief for the Needy 2.Economic Recovery 3.Financial Reform What were some of the programs in the New Deal? 1. WPA (Works Progress Administration) – musicians, artists, historians, writers developed and documented U.S. culture 2. CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) – young men who worked on: soil conservation projects, fish hatcheries, wildlife refuges, tree planting projects, fighting forest fires How did the New Deal help Washington State? The New Deal allowed WA State to begin construction on the Grand Coulee Dam. -provided jobs for many destitute Dust Bowl migrants -seven thousand men from all over the PNW found jobs on the giant construction project -low-cost power was made available
