Unit 6 Popular and Accessory Nutrients HW205

Unit 6 Learning Objectives Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to: Define what an accessory nutrient is. Be able to determine why each of these accessory nutrients would be recommended.

Focus of the Seminar We will discuss where accessory nutrients are being sold, price and whether GMPs are ever mentioned

Remind me what GMPs are…. Where have you heard this acronym before? What does it stand for? What does it mean? Not to be confused with GMOs which are what???

Good Manufacturing Processes Regulations governing the preparation, packing, and holding of dietary supplements under conditions that ensure their safety. What government agency enforces these?

The Accessory Nutrients An accessory nutrient is something other than a vitamin, mineral or herb that we can supplement with. An accessory nutrient would be taken to help enhance health, although not essential. Could possibly be classified as “conditionally essential”. Why?

The popular accessory nutrients CoQ-10 Carnitine Glucosamine Melatonin Probiotics Flavonoids Phosphatidylserine

What are some important flavonoids? Quercitin Citrus bioflavonoids Green tea polyphenols Proanthrocyanidins Rutin

Additional accessory nutrients Fiber supplements Gamma-oryzanol Lipoic acid Medium-chain triglycerides S-adenosylmethione (SAM)

Essential fatty acids Omega 3 fatty acids: soybean oil, canola oil, walnuts, cold water fish, flax. Eat more of these! Omega 6 fatty acids: seeds, nuts, vegetable oils. Our diets have far too many of these.
