What is function notation and how can you use functions to model real-world situations?

TOPIC: What is function notation and how can you use functions to model real-world situations? Remember, x is the independent variable (input) and y is the dependent variable (output). Substitute f(x) in for y and solve a linear equation.

Real world example: A lawyer’s fee is $180 per hour for his services. How much does the lawyer charge for 5 hours? 1.Identify the dependent and independent variables 2. Write an equation in function notation 1.The fee depends on how many hours he works: The lawyer charges $900 for 5 hours of work.

Assuming the lawyer only charges for full hours, what would the DOMAIN be? Domain = All whole numbers What would the RANGE be? Range = 0 and all positive multiples of 180

Work in your groups: 1.Identify the dependent and independent variables 2. Write an equation in function notation 1.The cost depends on how many rides you go on: It costs $30 to go to the carnival and go on 12 rides. The admission fee at a carnival is $9. Each ride costs $1.75. How much does it cost to go to the carnival and then go on 12 rides? Write in FUNCTION NOTATION

Assuming the lawyer only charges for full hours, what would the DOMAIN be? Domain = All whole numbers What would the RANGE be? Range = 0 and all positive multiples of 1.75

REMEMBER: DO THE WORK ON A LINED SHEET OF PAPER USING THE “TWO-COLUMN” FORMAT WE DISCUSSED. THESE ARE SHORT WORD PROBLEMS, SO WRITE THE PROBLEMS OUT AND DO YOUR WORK UNDERNEATH THE PROBLEM.
