What ’ s about our next steps on ECLAP content? Maia Giacobbe Borelli 1 Content Board October 19, 2011, Rome, Italy ECLAP Internal Meeting

According to the DoW the Content Board has to: 1. Follow the decision of the project decision board and project management board 2. Control and verify the quality of the contents chosen for the final demonstrator 3. Ensure the proposed level of enrichment of cultural contents 4. Ensure the quality definition of metadata 5. Ensure the repurposing and re-usability of contents 2 Content Board October 19, 2011, Rome, Italy

3 Ensure the proposed level of enrichment of the ECLAP content

A common space for European Performing Arts 3- Ensure the proposed level of enrichment of cultural contents To enrich the quality of content offered by ECLAP there is a strong need to contextualize it, identifying: A wider notion of Performing Arts based on our partners’ collections ECLAP as a meaningful and reliable gatekeeper ECLAP as a common space for Performing Arts in EuropeECLAP as a common space for Performing Arts in Europe

A common space for European Performing Arts A common space for European Performing Arts is not just a space for Performing Arts in Europe Building and recognizing the trans-national notion of European Performing Arts it doesn’t mean to juxtapose content coming from several partners in the same virtual space but to organize it in a common shared dimension across national identities and across different languages giving meaning to ECLAP claim of connecting stages.

A common space for European Performing Arts Building ECLAP as a common space for European Performing Arts through the proposal of: a common vision of European Performing Arts History the use of a trans-national Performing Arts Vocabulary to be shared by all content partners. This could be the basis of our ECLAP content enrichment.

A common space for European Performing Arts To enrich items we need to situate and contextualize our content offering information based on several criteria: Timelines (diachronic and synchronic correspondences) Maps for geographic/location data Semantic key wording Aggregation and clustering activity

How to select the best items to be enriched? How to highlight an European dimension? The selection of the best items that should be enriched will start from “top ten” listed by partners in the content questionnaire. We will work on enrichment through the following actions: Setting a Redaction Committee of the ECLAP portal Launching a general debate through our forum Soliciting user’s activity and likeness Proposing different aggregation criteria (see DE 4.2.1, paragraph 4.3 Table Aggregation criteria), as follows:

How to select the best items to be enriched? Some aggregation criteria Criteria of the broader interest or popularity (Masters of the Performing Arts) Criteria of the rarity and preciousness of the items for professional and creative use (The best of ECLAP collections) Geographical criteria (European dance, European music, European theatre, etc.) Historical or chronological criteria (XX Century decades of European Performing Arts)

How to select the best items to be enriched? Content Board next activity plan, could be to: Foster a proper internal debate in order to reach a common ground Improve interoperability between different collections Motivate ECLAP users to discover, discuss and annotate our content, expressing their needs and preferences Push ECLAP portal to improve usability and friendliness.

An example: focusing on the trans-national history of European theatre Activity needed to reach a shared European dimension in theatre: Finding traces of a common history of Performing Arts in Europe into our collections Defining important masters, masterpieces, places and events at European level to meaningfully aggregate our content (i.e. historical events like Unesco Theatre Festivals, Venice Biennale, Beograd Festival, etc. etc.) Sharing a language, via the definition of specific ECLAP metadata fields and keywords Building a common vision.

An example: focusing on the trans-national history of European theatre To select best items of ECLAP collection on theatre to be enriched we need to choose regardless of national provenience: Reaching a wide consensus between content partners Underlining items’ trans-national identities

An example: focusing on the trans-national history of European theatre Bulding the notion of Masters of European Theatre Masters of the XX Century theatre in Europe were the living trace of a new European cultural identity, being: Rooted not only in their national identity but in their trans-national activities held in various different European countries Acting as bridges between Polish and Italian theatre, British and French, Danish and Italian, etc. etc..

An example: focusing on the trans-national history of European theatre Enriching content around the notion of Masters of European Theatre To enrich our theatre content we could start building monographs related to the work of Peter Brook, Jerzy Grotowski, Eugenio Barba, Leon Schiller and other Masters of European Theatre that are in our ECLAP collection.

How to work on enrichment in an European dimension? The same activity planned for selecting European Masters of Theatre could be used for selecting: European Contemporary Dance connecting Belgium and France to all other countries, through the activity of Masters dancers. European Masters of Music connecting European Opera Theatres to their Masters composers’ nationalities. European Masters of Dramaturgy connecting Masters writers of different nationalities to the theatre companies and institutions where their drama have been performed. European Performance Art building bridges from Nederland and Spain to the rest of Europe.

How to work on enrichment in an European dimension? To build the notion of an European dimension in the Performing Arts ECLAP content partners could organize many examples of monographs enriching Performing Arts content with an European dimension. ECLAP monographs with an European dimension could be proposed as an highlight in Europeana.

How to work on enrichment in an European dimension? To build the notion of an European dimension in the Performing Arts ECLAP could contribute to foster the debate about preservation of European Cultural Heritage through the notion of an European trans-national dimension in the Performing Arts. ECLAP has to consider this notion as an added but significant value of its Best Practice activity ECLAP will be able to contribute to the increasing of cross- cultural knowledge in the field of Performing Arts.

First step to reach the foreseen goal will be to structure our Content Board activity…

Thank you! Maia G Borelli Content Board Rome, October 19, 2011
