The E-Portfolio for GP Training This is 1/3 of your MRCGP exam It is your course work 3 year record of your experiences learning progress

A tool for trainees... ➲ It is formative Guides your progress Suggests training opportunities A record store for your teaching and experiences Gives you confidence you are following a common path Helps prepare you for independent practice

… and your assessors ➲ It is summative Helps your supervisors monitor your progress A very useful early warning system for problems in training There are hoops you need to leap through CBD / MiniCEX / COT / ESR / PSQ / DOP !! These are not barriers They are aids to help prepare you for your future as a GP

Quality or Quantity ➲ Quality is of paramount importance ➲ Do not sacrifice quality for quantity ➲ But if there is not enough quantity how can we properly assess the quality?!

Minima ➲ Everyone always wants to know the minimum requirements! 1 per week as ST1 2 per week as ST2 3 per week as ST3 ➲ But to actually impress? 2-3 per week as ST1 – ST2 3-5 per week as ST3 ➲ Curriculum coverage 2 to 4 links per entry At least 5 per curriculum section over 3 years

Competences Aim of WPBA is to prove your have achieved the 12 Competences. ▪ Make sure you are familiar with them all ▪ Consider them when you make entries ▪ You may wish to refer to them eg “I feel this entry shows how I demonstrated good 'Community Orientation'.”

Reflection What? did you do? was difficult? did you learn? else could you have done? How? did you feel? did everyone else feel? did you communicate to colleagues? Why? was it difficult did you do it? might you do something different next time? What does reflection mean? Reflection is learning to look at yourself and your experiences from the outside.

Specific Entries Clinical Encounters – Most important entry – Try to do at least one per fortnight – Clinical aspect is important – Consider psychosocial – Reflection even more important Professional Conversations – Not just with supervisors! – Registrars, peers, colleagues, nurses, physios, receptionists, and so on. – Shows good teamwork

More Entries Significant Events: always be on the look out for things that might have gone wrong (near misses) or that could be improved. Any complaints affecting the team, not just you. Easy entries: reading / tutorials / seminars / lectures / e-learning. More of a simple record but still consider WHAT you learnt and HOW you can apply it. These look all the more impressive if linked to PDP!

PDP Needs to be SMART Specific I want to learn about the Red Eye Measurable I will do an on-line study module Achievable Not 1 week ophthalmology course Relevant Not learning about cataract op techniques Timely I will do it within 2 weeks

TIPS ➲ Just do it! – Don't worry too much; just write stuff! ➲ Use it often – Little and often better than big infrequent entries. ➲ Care with writing is important – The EP is a form of communication. It needs to be legible and understandable. – Re-read your entries before you “share” them. – Check for misspellings and typos. ➲ “Ten E-portfolio Pearls” – A very useful on-line document (google it).
