Chapter 28 – Section 2 Pages

Kennedy Deals with Global Challenges  Kennedy had to focus on foreign policy to guide nation through Cold War of 1960s. CHECK THIS OUT -  Inaugural Address: “Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty.” – THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKIN’ ABOUT MR. PRESIDENT!!

A Flexible Response  “Flexible Response” – A build up of conventional troops and weapons in case other nations needed help against Communism.  It was costly, but would allow U.S. to fight quickly if necessary.  This is how the “Green Berets” got started (guerilla warfare as necessary)

Latin America  Kennedy wanted to renew diplomatic relations with Latin America.  Conditions in much of Latin America society were not good:  Governments run by a wealthy few,  citizens lived in extreme poverty  possible overthrowing of governments.  Alliance of Progress: Kennedy suggests a series of cooperative aid projects with Latin American governments.

Latin America  U.S. pledged $20 Billion over a 10 year period.  In Chile, Colombia, Venezuela and Central America, the alliance helped.  In others though, rulers just used the money to help them stay in power.

Peace Corps  An organization that sent young Americans to perform humanitarian services in less developed nations.  Two years in a country  Built houses, sewage systems, roads, taught English  Still strong organization today

The Bay of Pigs  Cuba:  Dictator: Fidel Castro  Had ties with Soviet Union and took over foreign- owned businesses in the country (many American)  Fear was that Soviets would use Cuba as a base to spread Communist revolution.

The Bay of Pigs - Continued  Kennedy authorized CIA to secretly train former Cubans to invade the island of Cuba.  Called La Brigada:  Disaster! The boats got stuck in coral reefs  Kennedy cancelled air support to try and keep U.S. involvement a secret.  All members were killed or captured.

Cuban Missile Crisis  Soviet Union placed long-range missiles in Cuba.  U.S. public is shocked and scared  Soviet Union refuses to listen to Kennedy’s requests to stand down  Agreement made: no use of missiles if U.S. doesn’t invade Cuba and removes missiles in Turkey.  1963: Ban of testing of Nuclear Weapons passed.

Death of a President NNovember 22 nd, President Kennedy is assassinated! TTurn to page 850 LListen to how it went down
