How does a partnership work? Tom Broadhurst

Case studies Rawabit Initiative – Iraq Twinning Iraqi technical institutions with UK FE colleges Focus on improving leadership and management skills Leadership and management training programme developed with the UK’s Centre for Excellence in Leadership In 2005, 24 Iraqi institution heads spent 3-weeks in the UK working alongside Principals in UK FE colleges

Case studies UK-India Education and Research Initiative – Professional and Technical Skills Mutually beneficial partnerships between UK colleges, Indian training institutions and industry partners Focus on joint curriculum development in priority sectors (financial services, fashion and textiles) linked to industry needs Opportunities for student and staff exchange

UKIERI - Blackburn College and South Delhi Polytechnic for Women Sector - Fashion and textiles Aims - securing employment for women in the textile and fashion industries - identify and address the skill needs of the fashion and textiles sector in both countries Outputs – joint development of an international design module - designing new module in Ethical Manufacturing - communications hub for staff, students and local employers

UKIERI - Blackburn College and South Delhi Polytechnic for Women Activities - Joint curriculum development - Staff visits - Student exchange - Student collaborative projects - International design competition - International fashion show Funding – less than £20,000 per year

UKIERI - Blackburn College and South Delhi Polytechnic for Women Benefits “The major thing for us has been the cultural exchange. At South Delhi they incorporate a lot of traditional textile making methods into new fashions, focus on making up garments and are technically very proficient. In the UK our approach is based on new ideas and innovation, with less emphasis on traditional skills.” “Attempting to form links overseas, particularly with a country like India with an expanding textiles and apparel sector, has helped raise our profile with the local borough council and the Asian Business Federation. Both are interested in forging links with South Delhi Polytechnic” (Neil Owen, Blackbrun College)

UKIERI – City College Norwich, Tower Hamlets College and Indian Institute of Foreign Trade Sector – Financial services Aims - examine the impact of globalisation on the financial services industry - research and address global skills needs in financial services Partners - University of East Anglia Business School - Marsh - Norwich Union - KPMG (UKIERI keystone partner)

UKIERI – City College Norwich, Tower Hamlets College and Indian Institute of Foreign Trade Outputs Research on skills development in Financial Services Joint d evelopment of course on Financial Regulation, International Financial Services and Employability skills in a global environment Development of Cultural Awareness course in conjunction with employer’s Marsh Project website Activities Joint curriculum development 10 students visited UK employers Staff exchange Employer skills-needs research

UKIERI – City College Norwich, Tower Hamlets College and Indian Institute of Foreign Trade Benefits “It’s really vital that our students have an understanding of the global position of financial services. Meeting the students from India raised their cultural awareness in a much better way than just doing it in the classroom. And when they go to India they will see a comparison between financial services in the UK and India. Norwich Union and Marsh send managers all over the world, so the visit will help prepare our students for working internationally.” (Jenny Probert, City College Norwich) “This project keeps us up-to-date, it’s very good to have international relationships, to learn about good practice from other colleges.” (Therese Reinheimer-Jones, Tower Hamlets College) “It is prestigious for us to be invited to take part in this type of activity and it’s giving the college a positive image with local employers. We’re learning from what happens in another country and developing our relationship with another leading financial services college in the UK.” ( John Brierley, City College Norwich)
