Application Process It takes time and money (~$2,000) or more if you interview out of state! Non-reversible; Large positive Delta G Nothing; Except perhaps financial aid eligibility!

What is “medical school?” Typically four years of intense training First two are the “didactic years” – Cell Biology – Biochemistry – Embryology – Anatomy – Histology Second two are the “clinical years”

Clinical Years Completely in the hospital or clinic – Family medicine rotation – Surgery rotation – Orthopedics rotation – Psychiatry rotation – Electives

So, I want to be a Neurosurgeon… Specialties are chosen via a process called “The Match” During your fourth year you apply to and attend interviews at the institutions you are considering applying to. You rank them, they rank you… a computer algorithm matches so “everyone” wins! Unless you don’t match then you…

Scramble!!!! Empty residency spots try to find students without a spot!

The R.O.A.D.E. to success The following are extremely desirable residencies: -Radiology (good schedule, high salary) -Ophthalmology (high salary) -Anesthesiology (high salary) -Dermatology (high salary, 40 hrs/week) -Emergency Medicine (shift work)

What do you want to be??? Surgery (any type) Anesthesiology Family Medicine Internal Medicine Pediatrics

50% of you need to be primary care! Planning a webinar with Dr. Mark Loafman, M.D. Northwestern Family Practice Professor Interesting Primary care information!!!

How much schooling will this be? 4 years at UW-L 4 years at Medical School 3 years of Residency (for Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics) 4 years (Anesthesiology) 5 years General Surgery, Orthopedics 7 years or more (Neurosurgery, Transplant Surgery)

Some definitions Internship: first year after medical school Residency: second, third forth year of medical training Attending: an individual who has completed training House staff: the staff that never leave and find the hospital to be their house

How much does this cost? UW-L four years = $52,000 Medical School = $125,000 - $250,000 Residency? They pay you ~$50,000/year, which is commensurate with increased training.

How do you pay for it? Your parents do…

How do you really pay for it? Loans Perhaps a scholarship… It doesn’t really matter, if you get in you’ll pay for it…

How do you pay it off? Family practitioner ($180,000) Orthopedic surgery ($250,000) Emergency medicine ($200,000)

You can do it!!!! But, only if you really want it!

Gender Disparity In 2008, 27.7% of practicing physicians were female Current medical school enrollment is 50/50 at most US Medical Schools

Advising hints Take cell biology and biochemistry together Take microbiology and genetics together Don’t always take the “easy professor,” you still need to rock the MCAT!
