Key Stage 2 SATs “If you can dream it, you can do it!”

The importance of the SAT’s tests. The National Curriculum tests are designed to assess children’s knowledge and understanding of specific elements of the Key Stage 2 programmes of study. They provide a snapshot of a child’s attainment at the end of the key stage.

The importance of the SAT’s tests. SATs provide individual pupil’s depth of understanding, of the new national curriculum. Secondary schools use the results to form grouping/ability sets etc as SATs results are passed on to the secondary schools when pupils transfer. SATs results are reported to the DfES with individual schools` performance published in performance tables, usually referred to as `league tables`. As with KS1 and KS3, the end of KS2 statutory assessments are part of the Government`s commitment to raising standards.

Wednesday 11 May Mathematics, Paper 1, arithmetic test. Mathematics, Paper 2, reasoning. Thursday 12 MayMathematics Paper 3, reasoning. Monday 9 May English reading test, reading booklet and associated answer booklet. Tuesday 10 May English grammar, punctuation and spelling test, Paper 1, short answer questions. English grammar, punctuation and spelling test, Paper 2, spelling.

Test Format – Reading 1 hour test Testing retrieval of information – who, what and when type of questions. Inference and deduction – why, how, use of language. Why a particular word used and meaning in context. Opinion and reasoning – what do you think and why? Using the text to justify an answer. Reasoning on authorial choices e.g.– How does the author create suspense?

Test Format – SPAG Tested with SPAG tests 2 tests: one for grammar, punctuation and vocabulary use. 45 minutes (50 marks) e.g. identifying a feature like subordinate clauses. or correct use of grammar such as apostrophes, synonyms, colons and semicolons Spelling - Spelling rules and statutory word list – 20 questions.(20marks)

Test Format – Maths Maths – new written tests Arithmetic test 35 questions in 30 minutes. Two, 40 minute tests word problem based questions.

Test Format – Writing Teacher assessment only for independent writing. This is not just what they do in Big Write every week but across the curriculum. There will be – ‘The pupil can’ statements. Teachers have to show evidence that a pupil can do these in all (or most) of their writing.

Test Format – Science Not all schools will take science SATs. However, a number of schools will be required to take part in science sampling. For those who are selected, there will be three papers: Biology: 25 minutes, 22 marks Chemistry: 25 minutes, 22 marks Physics: 25 minutes, 22 marks It sounds very intimidating, but these are ‘questions in a physics/chemistry/biology context’, for example: ‘Describe the differences in the life cycle of an amphibian and a mammal’

Marking and results The test will be sent away for independent marking. The previous national curriculum levels have been scrapped, and instead children will be given scaled scores You will be given your child’s raw score (the actual number of marks they get), alongside their scaled score and whether they have reached the expected level. Scaled score of 100 will be used as the expected level. The raw score on each test needed to reach the expected level has yet to be announced. For the teacher assessment we have to give: Working below the expected standard, working at the expected standard, working at a greater depth within the expected standard.

How we deliver them One child per table All year 6 children will be in their classroom. All display boards are covered. Some pupils given extra time dependent on any special educational needs. Everything is fully resourced. SAT’s paper are stored in a secured area with restrictive access. Schools can be monitored on their deliverance of SAT’s without notice to ensure they meet LA requirements.

What we, as a school, are doing for your child? Identify needs of children and grouping them according to ability. Work is differentiated accordingly. How will we support the children during SATs week? We will do everything we can to make the week as stress-free as possible for the children. Breakfast is provided for the pupils from 8.00am. This allows pupils to come into school and chat with friends and relax before the tests begin. It also ensures children have energy for the day ahead! We will provide a snack/drink during the break. We will make sure the children have an enjoyable afternoon with cross curricular activities so that they are free of the worries of the tests. We will make sure children know they have plenty of people in school to support and encourage them should they have any worries during the week.

Homework Ensure children are completing their homework allocated by their class teacher.

What can you do at home? Encourage and support children with completion of homework. Listen to children read regularly and ask questions. Ask for help from school Encourage your child to be confident about their ability to do well. Make sure they get enough sleep. Make sure they eat breakfast. Encourage them to ask an adult in school if they are unsure about anything. Explain that the SATs are a way of showing what they know. Tell them ‘how good they are’ and remind them ‘THEY CAN’T FAIL!’
